Beaumont Event Helps Parents Teach Special Needs Children with iPads
Just because a child doesn’t learn by traditional methods, doesn’t mean he cannot learn at all. Beaumont Health System behavioraltherapists and parents are finding this out with the recent adaptation of iPads and other electronic tablet devices. There are many success stories showing that adding tablet learning to therapy helps children with various learning disabilities, including autism.
The Beaumont Hands-On Parent Education Center, a behavioral program that emphasizes parent training, that is part of Beaumont Children’s Hospital, is hosting a special interactive event called “Yes iCan!” to help educate parents in iPad use.
“Yes iCan!” takes place on Sunday, Sept. 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. It will be held at the Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak Administration Building auditorium.
Attendees will learn the best ways to shop for and buy an iPad, methods for teaching children to use and excel with an iPad; and where to find relevant applications for children at different developmental levels.
There will also be a drawing to win an iPad2.
“It’s been amazing to see the kids respond to an electronic device when other traditional methods just aren’t working,” says Lori Warner, Ph.D., director, Beaumont Children’s Hospital’s HOPE Center. “There’s a lot of potential for parents to use this technology to improve family interactions with their autistic children or their children with other developmental disabilities.”
There is no charge to attend, but seating is limited. RSVP to Dr. Warner at lwarner@beaumont.edu or by calling 248-691-4774.
