Grosse Pointe South Defeats Country Day, 3-0

Grosse Pointe South put together a strong effort to defeat Country Day 3-0 at Southfield Sports Arena Saturday night. South dominated much of the game.

"It wasn't a very good effort tonight," said Country Day coach Frank Novock.  "Bottom line is when you don't compete, you don't deserve to win. We didn't deserve to win in any facet of the game tonight."

The first period was scoreless.

South scored a little over a minute into the second period as they kept the puck deep inside the Country Day end. Max Corden scored from Andrew Bigham.  Neither team scored the rest of the period and at the end of the second period the score remained 1-0 in favor of South.

Forty-six seconds into the third period, Grosse Pointe South got a penalty, then seventeen seconds later Country Day picked up a penalty as well.  With just two seconds left in the Country Day penalty, South converted on its power play.  Shane Sparkman scored from Tommy McShane to make it 2-0.

South continued to control play.  With the clock winding down and under two minutes left in the game, Country Day pulled its goalie for the extra attacker.  With that extra attacker, the Yellowjackets were pressuring Grosse Pointe South. South, however, blocked a Country Day shot from the point. Andrew Bigham picked up the puck and raced down for an empty-netter to complete the scoring for the night.

"[Grosse Pointe South] played hard and capitalized on some chances," said Coach Novock.  "But we were just not good all the way around tonight, and we got what we deserved."
