Grosse Pointe Woods Offers Lifeguard Training

Pool season will be upon us sooner than you think.

In preparation, the Grosse Pointe Woods Parks & Recreation department will offer American Red Cross Lifeguard Training.

The 5-week course will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, Wednesday, Feb. 29 through Monday, April 2. No class will be held Saturday, March 17.

Monday and Wednesday classes will be held 6 to 9 p.m. at the Grosse Pointe Woods Community Center, 20025 Mack Plaza, except for Monday, April 2, which will be held at the Grosse Pointe North High School pool, 707 Vernier Road. Saturday sessions are from noon to 3 p.m. at the North High School pool. Due to the compressed class schedule, students must attend each session; no make-up classes will be scheduled.

The course will give participants the skills and knowledge necessary to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies.

To take the class, students must be at least 15 years old by April 4, 2012, able to swim 500 yards using front crawl and breaststroke, and able to dive to a depth of 13 feet to retrieve a 10-pound brick.

Registration is $200 per person for Grosse Pointe Woods residents ($220 for non-residents). Books and materials are included with the cost.

Those who are interested at the Grosse Pointe Woods Community Center office before Feb. 28. Space is limited. For more information, call the Community Center at (313) 343-2408.
