Grosse Pointe Park police arrested three men early Friday after being called to a car fire only to discover the owner on the porch of a vacant home recently burglarized. The men have all been charged in two burglaries of the same home on Bedford and are expected to be arraigned today, Capt. David Loch said.

Detectives were investigating the theft of copper pipes and a hot water tank from a vacant home that happened between 8 p.m. Jan. 22 to 1 p.m. Jan. 23. Officers found a sim card in the home that did not belong to the owner of the home, according to a report.

Then about 1 a.m. Friday, officers were called to the block by a resident after a man began knocking on his door asking that police be called because his car was on fire, Loch said.

When officers arrived, the car owner was sitting on the front porch of the home that had been burglarized only a few days earlier, which they found suspicious. When they asked why he was sitting there rather than near the home where he knocked on the door for help, he did not have an answer, according to a report.

Officers then found that the back door of the previously burglarized home was unlocked and when they searched it, they found two men hiding in the attic, leading to the arrest of all three men, Loch said.

The men, all from Detroit, ages 17, 19 and 20, are all in policy custody. Each admitted to burglarizing the home a few night's prior and to helping steal a stove and dishwasher from the home the night the car caught fire, Loch said.

Formal charges authorized by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office were approved Monday. Each of the men faces two counts of breaking and entering, Loch said.
