Additional Kindergarten Class to be Created at Mason, Poupard

Following a rise in enrollment that came just before the start of the school year, Grosse Pointe Public School officials posted two jobs Tuesday for all-day kindergarten teachers--one for Mason and one for Poupard.

Grosse Pointe Public School officials intended to observe the first day of classes at Mason and Poupard elementaries closely after experiencing a rapid rise in enrollment late last week specificlly for kindergarten.

Late Tuesday, two job openings for all-day kindergarten were posted on the district's website--one each for Mason and Poupard. The postings likely mean the district is adding an additional kindergarten classroom to each school.

Some parents from Mason were notified by school officials of the change Tuesday. Patch is awaiting information from district officials about the exact numbers and classroom sizes.

At Mason, there were originally slated to be two kindergarten classsrooms but a third will be added, according to parents.

According to the job postings, the deadline for application is Sept. 7--indicating the district's desire to fill the positions quickly.

District officials added assistants at both schools to support the kindergarten classrooms last week after experiencing the sudden rise in enrollment, which is why they intended to monitor the situation this week as students reported to school for the beginning of the year.

Kudos for taking action to assure that Kindergarten student-teacher ratios remain appropriate to effective instruction. More data in the article would have been helpful to better understand this situation: originally projected enrollment, change in enrollment and before/after student-teacher ratios. These would be helpful to understanding the "rapid rise in enrollment late last week specifically for kindergarten," as would speculation on what drove this change. I'm sure that the administration will be reviewing this information and more as part of their process improvement to get staffing right next September.

Sounds fishy to me. Happens right in the rental zone of the woods. Legal students?

I gotta buy a rental on the east end of Harper Woods.

Hard to blame those folks though. If my choices were North, Harper High or Detroit, I'd get a rental in GPPS district too. I just worry about the quality of classes who have to try and catch up disadvantaged students without any financial help from outside the district.

I get a little sick of paying double for everything while my kid waits for the next chapter to begin because the new kids cant read.
