Anita Baker Update: Faulty GPS Directions

The City of Grosse Pointe police investigated the encounter reported by Anita Baker earlier this week to discover the Shelby Township woman works for a cleaning crew and went to the wrong address.

The Shelby Township woman who was mistakenly ended up at her house, Public Safety Director Stephen Poloni said.

The woman was with a cleaning crew, and they had entered the address of the home they were intending to go to into a GPS, Poloni said. But somehow the GPS defaulted to a different address, which ended up being the home of singer Anita Baker.

Detectives interviewed the woman, who tried to enter the back door of Baker's home after peering into one of her windows while she was home working on her computer, according to a report.

The woman left as soon as she was unable to get into the home but Baker got the license plate from the Jeep, which helped investigators track the woman and cleaning crew down.

Poloni said she and the rest of the crew were surprised when they were contacted by investigators. They had no idea they were at Baker's home, he said.

It still is not clear why the woman did not talk to Baker after she was unable to get into the house, Poloni said, but the crew realized after not being able to enter the home as instructed by the person who hired them that they were on the wrong street.

The house they were aiming to service was two streets away, Poloni said, and they tried the front door of Baker's home too thinking they misunderstood about where to enter the home to clean.

After the interviews, detectives do not believe there was any criminal intent, Poloni said.

Late last year, . He was sentenced in court under an agreement that allows the case to be eliminated from his record if he complies with all court orders.
