Biggby Coffee in Grosse Pointe Farms to Close Doors Dec. 30
New Biggby Coffee to open soon in Grosse Pointe Woods.
It's been five and half years of lattes and mochas served up at the Biggby Coffee at 18480 Mack Ave. in Grosse Pointe Farms and now it will come to an end on Dec. 30, when the popular coffee spot closes its doors for good.
The coffee house will be open for business until 5 p.m. on Dec. 30 and then open for a reception from 5 - 8 p.m. for all its loyal customers.
Owner Sue Loredo says the closure is not a surprise since earlier building lease negotiations fell through and the lease will not be going forward.
Loredo is brokenhearted about the closure and held off telling her staff right away.
"I was worried about telling them at this time of year...but it would be hard to do this in June or October too," Loredo said.
A clock that hung in the store broke about the time Loredo made the decision to close her doors so she didn't replace it. Used by staff and customers alike, the clock was sorely missed and was replaced by one of Loredo's loyal customers, who did not know the shop would be closing.
"It's a wonderful thing that my customers are so vested in us and we in them," Loredo said tearfully.
On the bright side, Biggby fans won't have to go far for their favorite cup of joe - a new location will be opening in Grosse Pointe Woods, according to Loredo.
"I think the majority of my kids (employees) will be working there," Loredo explained. "The new owners are really nice people."
Loredo is unsure what business may occupy her former space but heard that Blufin Sushi in Grosse Pointe Farms may relocate there. (Patch was unable to confirm this information at the time this article was published via telephone or email.)
As for future business plans, Loredo says although she's close to being ready for retirement, she's always worked and thinks she still wants to for a few more years.
"I think I'm going to take the winter off. I have two grand babies being born in the next couple of months and I'm going to take time to enjoy them."
