Farms Council Creates Communication Committee
Grosse Pointe Farms officials will be accepting resumes and letters of interest from residents who are interested in volunteering on the new committee aimed at improving communication between the city and its residents.
Grosse Pointe Farms council members are looking for up to three residents to volunteer to serve on a new communications committee they've created to improve the communication between the city and its residents.
The council unanimously approved the committee Monday, which has a formally written set of policies and procedures outlining its purpose, membership and organization.
The committee will be comprised of three residents and two council members with a goal of reviewing the way in which the city communicates with its residents and to address specific situations in which communications are necessary when they arise.
Many residents voiced complaints during the inland district flooding problems last year about feeling as if the city was not doing a good job of communicating well with its residents. They requested that the city evaluate the way it communicates with residents.
City Manager Shane Reeside said officials are requesting submission of a resume and a letter of interest to apply for one of the three resident positions on the committee.
Assistant City Manager and City Clerk Matthew Tepper said the posting for the position was put on the city's website last month after council finalized their wishes about the committee.
Officials are hopeful to have the committee together by the March council meeting so it may begin meeting and delving into the review.

I sure hope that committee explores the concept of televising its Council meetings. I think residents who are not mobile would be interested in watching these proceedings. The cable stations should do more than present power point shows.

Chris great comment currently there is the Grosse Pointe School Board Grosse Pointe Shores and lets not forget our friends in Harper Woods who televise their School Board meetings. One of the issues at this time may be.... money but I will be sending a note to my city council to see what the status is. I do know it has been looked at discussed over the years.

Yes, it has been discussed over the years and the excuse that has been provided aside from money is the fear that residents will use a camera for grandstanding, it will quell the speech of some residents to get up and speak at all or stifle debate within the council itself. The jurisdictions you note don't seem to have experienced any of these problems. So.. what is the real reason? Transparency is a nice concept in theory but gets a little thorny in practice?
