First Place People's Choice Award: Perchfolio
After tallying votes taken last week at the unveiling of the 51 Grosse Pointe Perch that will be lining the streets of the five communities this summer, the Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce announced the first place winner today as Perchfolio.
Perchfolio, one of the 51 Grosse Pointe Perch, is the first place winner in the People's Choice Award, in which votes were lodged last week during an unveiling party at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House.
The Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce announced the first place winner Wednesday. The artists whose fish won will receive a gift certificate to a restaurant.
The project is meant to draw people to the Pointes to not only roam the community to see the fish but also to frequent the many businesses. In October, some of the fish will be auctioned off as part of a fundraiser for Services for Older Citizens.
Perchfolio was sponsored by John F. Martin Photography, and the artist is Sue Majewski, of St. Clair Shores. Perchfolio was placed Tuesday outside of 19471 Mack Ave. in Grosse Pointe Woods, along with the other 50 fish who were scattered about the five Pointes. The heaviest concentration of fish are along Mack Avenue and Kercheval Avenue.
The Perch features nearly 600 photos from Martin's archives of friends, family and clients from the past two years. Martin and several of his friends cut out people's faces to fit individual glass scales. Majewski placed the photos underneath the scales before attaching to the fish.
"She literally had Band-Aids on her fingers from the glass," Martin said of the work Majewski put into the fish. "I stood there in awe for 20 minutes."
In addition to the cuts to her fingers, Majewski said that she worked outside during the recent heat wave to finish her fish.
"It was all worth it," she said of the finished product and the honor.
