GP School Board Approves 13 Teacher Layoffs

The Grosse Pointe Public School officials have begun evaluating staffing needs for the 2012/13 school year. Next month, the board will likely receive a layoff list of support staff.

The Board approved 13 teacher layoffs related to the 2012/13 school year as the preliminary step to establishing staffing needs.

While establishing the list is necessary at this point, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Jon Dean told the board it is still early because its likely that he had not yet received notice of retirements, resignations or other changes to staffing that generally come in late May and early June.

Some of the 13 teachers on the staff could be recalled yet this year depending on changes that arise in the coming months, he said.

The teachers on the list are primarily from the elementary level but there are a few from the upper levels that are speciality teachers, Dean said. Enrollment in some specialty areas is down and those who organize the master schedule have said they have the appropriate staffing levels, he said.

Another factor that is adding the staffing mix is that there are many more teachers who are returning from leave than taking leave recently, Dean said.

Next month Dean will present a list related to non-instructional staff after assessing the district's need.
