Grosse Pointe Bulldogs Win Hockey Tourney
The 1998 Grosse Pointe Bulldogs won the Bauer World Invite Tournament in Chicago.
The 1998 Grosse Pointe Bulldogs won the AAA Bantam Major championship at the Bauer World Invite Tournament in Chicago the weekend of Nov. 2.
The Grosse Pointe Bulldogs went 6-1 during the three-day tournament and outscored their opposition 37-12 in the seven games.
After losing their first game of the tournament 2-1 to the Affton (MO) Americans, the Bulldogs won their next three round-robin games.
Sam Knoblauch scored three goals in an 8-4 triumph over the Florida Jr. Panthers. Theo Calvas, Gunner Markiewicz, Mac Cimmarrusti, Brandon VanOphem and Marshall Vyletel also scored, and Zack Kaiser (2), Logan Jenuwine (2) and Mac Welsher had assists.
Vyletel, Jenuwine and Welsher scored in a 3-1 victory over the Soo Greyhounds. Jonathan Theros, Tate MacDonald, Markiewicz and Cimmarrusti had assists.
Welsher and Zack Pearson each scored three goals in a 13-1 triumph over the Houston Wild. Jenuwine had two goals, and Theros, Vyletel, Calvas and Jack Flynn also scored. Griffin Brooks, Cimmarrusti (2), Welsher, Pearson, Jenuwine (2) and Markiewicz (3) had assists.
Welsher scored the winning goal in the second overtime in a 2-1 decision over the Rochester Rattlers in the quarterfinals.
After defeating the Toronto Aeros 2-1 in the semifinals, the Bulldogs prevailed 7-2 over the Tampa Bay Scorpions in the championship game.
Jenuwine, Vyletel and VanOphem each scored two goals, and CJ Ramsdell also scored.
Goalies Alex Grimm and Jacob Robinson combined for a 1.71 goals against average in the tournament.
The event included 40 teams of 13- and 14-year-old players from 17 states and three Canadian provinces.
