Grosse Pointe North High School Principal Tim Bearden posted some of the highlights of the school's bragging rights on his blog Wednesday morning.
Bearden was preparing to give a marketing committee of Grosse Pointe Shores Ambassadors talking points they could use to brag about the high school.
Bearden says Norsemen should be proud to say their school:
- Is in the top 3% of highs schools in the United States by Top Schools Rankings (based on number of students taking AP and IB exams).
- Had 150 more students take AP exams last year than five years ago.
- Received a grade of “A” on Michigan Department of Education Report Card.
- Got a 9/10 on Great Schools National Rankings.
- Has a Quiz Bowl team undefeated in league play for 10 years, qualified for nationals each of past six years, State Champions in 2010, team has not lost to South in a decade.
- Offers 22 AP courses and a partnership program in Applied Medical Research.
- Has three Michigan Teacher of the Year teachers, and a National Earth Science Teacher of the Year.
- Had more than 600 AP exams administered last year with a 70% pass rate.
- And North and South are the only two public Michigan high schools to have been in Top Schools Ranking each year of its existence.

GPN is an awesome place. We have caring teachers, administrators, and a great community. If the Shores concil really wants to be ambassadors for the community, we should focus on all the grea things at North, not rumors and those with axes to grind.

As a parent, I had concerns about my son going to North. Once he got there, those concerns completely dissipated. The level of expertise and enthusiasm of the staff, especially the principal, is beyond anything I've experienced before (and I covered many schools as an education reporter). More than walking the halls, concerned visitors should go to "Back to School" night, where they will see real educational leadership and innovation. To me, North is really like a college campus. Students coming out of North are competitive and prepared for college. That is the ultimate test of an excellent high school.

Thank you Clare. Many thanks to Tim Bearden for his support and comments about the terrific student life at Grosse Pointe North. After living all over the U.S for several years we were happy to raise our kids in the GP School District. Our daughter graduated from both Parcells and G.P. North and had a great career at both schools. The teachers and administration are nothing short of outstanding. They prepared her well as she is now a Sophomore at Northwestern in Evanston with high honors and is very involved on campus. All due to the outstanding people at Parcells and North. We have a son who is a sophomore at GP South and graduate of Brownell. He is currently enjoying the outstanding environment offered by those wonderful teachers and administrators. We were very excited to hear that North's own Matt Outlaw became principal at South because he did very well at North as an assistant principal. Now being involved at South on the "other side" I have heard all the rumors brought up at the meeting in GP Shores about North and Parcells and they are totally without fact. The people who spread those rumors have never set foot in any of the two great schools. With experience as a parent on both sides of the district a big rivalry exists between North and South and I'm sure that rivalry exists between realtors who concentrate on certain parts of town. Don't believe everything you hear. Take Tim Bearden's advice and make a visit to both schools. You'll be very proud!

We should be proud of our administrators and staff at North - they do an outstanding job. Mr. Bearden's points on his blog are all accurate representations of a very fine school. If you want to read something impressive, also read the graduation speech that Mr. Bearden gave last year: http://northprincipal.blogspot.com/2011/06/congratulations-class-of-2011.html
