Grosse Pointe Perch: Take a Tour
The 51 Grosse Pointe Perch unveiled last week made their way to the streets this week. They were placed in the community throughout the day Tuesday and will remain in their current location through mid-October.
Have you spotted the Grosse Pointe Perch around town? They were placed in their semi-permanent locations this week after leaving the grounds of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, where they were unveiled in complete artist-decorated form.
The fish are eye-catching for passersby and many have been spotted checking out the fish, taking pictures of the fish, posing with the fish, and even hugging the fish.
The Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce has published maps that can be found throughout the five communities that pinpoints the location of each fish and provides a list of the names, their sponsors and their artist. Additionally, the Chamber released a digital version of the map this week.
In addition to being a charity project intended to ultimately raise funds for Services for Older Citizens, it is intended to draw people to the Pointes. The Chamber of Commerce is hopeful that people will not only visit the fish but also visit the businesses.
Most of the fish were sponsored by local businesses and are located in front of the corresponding storefront. Others were sponsored by families or organizations and are placed in more residential areas or at the parks.
The fish are distributed as follows:
- 3 are in St. Clair Shores
- 3 in Grosse Pointe Shores
- 13 are in Grosse Pointe Woods
- 18 are in Grosse Pointe Farms
- 11 are in the City of Grosse Pointe
- 3 are in Grosse Pointe Park
The Perch will remain in their current location until mid-October when the Chamber will host an auction of the fish at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. The auction proceeds will go to Services for Older Citizens, which is in the midst of a capital campaign for their future home on Ridge Road.
Among the 51 Perch are five king fish, five fishfly fish, three People's Choice Award Winners and one community decorated fish. Each of the Perch were decorated by selected artists over the last few months and each is unique. Some exhibit a Grosse Pointe theme while others are a business theme and yet more are water themed.
The Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce will be creating some contests involving the Perch throughout the summer.
