Grosse Pointe Schools Holds Forum on Proposed Education Reforms Tonight
GPPSS panel discussion and open forum dialogue at 7 p.m. on Dec. 11 at Brownell Middle School.
Grosse Pointe Public Schools will hold a forum on tonight, Dec. 11, to discuss proposed school reform legislation that has many concerned for Grosse Pointe Public Schools.
The forum with allow GPPS staff and attendees to further explore and discuss the issues of proposed school reform legislation in both the State House and Senate. There will be a panel discussion and open forum dialogue. The panel will consist of Marcie Lipsitt, a parent and education advocate; Judy Gafa, GPPSS School Board President; and Dr. Thomas Harwood, GPPSS Superintendent.
The proposed agenda for the forum is:
- Overview of recent proposed legislation
- Proposed federal and state legislation that is impacting programs and services in public education at the district level
- Policy and governance concerns about proposed state legislation
- Direct long-term impact on the Grosse Pointe Public Schools with this legislation
- Open Q and A with panel and participants
GPPSS Superintendent Tom Harwood sent district parents an email on Dec. 5 inviting them to the forum and urged them go to the district's website for additional superintendent blog postings on this important topic.
"As of today, we are still working to get our voices heard in regard to the proposed school reform legislation being introduced during this lame duck session in Lansing. I appreciate all of your support and your contacts to the legislative members to provide the necessary foundation that these proposed bills (HB6004/SB1358) are not good for public education in Michigan and will have an impact on the Grosse Pointe Public School System," Harwood wrote.
The forum will take place at 7 p.m. on Dec. 11 at Brownell Middle School in the Multipurpose Room.

Wish I could be there, but I have to work tonight. I really hope that an explanation of the disservice that is actually being done to students will be given.
I'd like a conversation about how, if Lansing politicians want to treat public education like a business and ignore the fact that students are people, not products, then they have to understand that when the workers who make the "product" in a normal business are treated like professionals and with respect, and given the resources they need to do their jobs, the quality of the "product" improves.
I'd like a discussion of how fragmenting a child's education by forcing parents to create their own curriculum a la carte from various districts, corporate schools, and online schools will lead to a deterioration of both the student/teacher and family/school relationship.
I'm hoping for an explanation of just how this plan will drain money out of the Grosse Pointe Public School System, thus leaving those of us who choose to leave our children in the very community schools we grew up in, often with the same teachers we had, with an underfunded and undersupported shell of a district.
I am certain these conversations will take place, and I look forward to hearing about how they went.
