Grosse Pointe Shores Voters Elect New Mayor, 5 New Council Members

Voters also re-elected one incumbent to council, Dan Schulte. The municipality also had 58 percent voter turnout.

Grosse Pointe Shores residents elected a new mayor, five new city council members and one incumbent Tuesday with a 58 percent turnout.

Ted Kedzierski ousted longterm incumbent James Cooper by nearly 200 votes. Kedzierski received 765 votes and Cooper 575. Kedzierski has been on the city council leading up to his run for the mayoral seat.

The new council includes Dan Schulte, Kay Felt, Robert Gesell, Alexander Ajlouni, Bruce Bisballe and Robert Barrette Jr. Schulte is the only incumbent re-elected to the council.

As outlined in the Shores City Charter, the top three vote getters and the mayoral vote getter will serve four year terms. The second three highest vote getters will serve two year terms.

This is the first election following the Shores' incorporation as a city, making it historical because the entire council will never be up for re-election at one time again. This election estblishes the rotation schedule for future elections.

Schulte, Felt and Gesell were the three top vote getters, meaning they will each serve four year terms. Ajlouni, Bisballe and Barrette were the next three highest vote getters, meaning they will each serve two year terms.

A breakdown of the votes:

Council Candidate Votes
Daniel Schulte 756
Kay Felt 737
Robert Gesell 735
Alexander Ajlouni 678
Bruce Bisballe 677
Robert Barrette Jr. 670
Brian Geraghty 669
David Galbenski 601
Elias Ropotos 406

A total of 1,347 residents voted during this election out of 2,346 registered voters. The Shores had 58 percent voter turnout.

A big congratulations to all Grosse Pointe Shores residents. The voter turnout for this election was greater than recent presidential elections. Thank you to all of the GPS staff and volunteers who gave so much of their time and energy to make this election go so smoothly. The volunteers were there for over 14 hours and did an awesome job. Thank you to Jim Cooper and the rest of the former council members for all of your past service and commitment and good luck to the newly elected officials. The voters were very passionate about this election and there are great expectations going forward. We all look forward to seeing very positive results.

For the first time in many years, Grosse Pointe Shores has a mayor and the entire council all elected by a mandate from the people. No mayor anointed by his predecessor, no council members seated by appointment! Isn't democracy a great thing?
