Grosse Pointe South Rower Signs with Stanford

Senior Alix Chrumka, who rows for South, the Detroit Boat Club and the U.S. National Team, will study biology.

At 17, Grosse Pointe Park's Alix Chrumka has traveled the world to compete as a rower. Early Wednesday, Chrumka signed with Stanford University where she will participate in crew and study biology. 

Chrumka is the captain of the Detroit Boat Club Crew on Belle Isle and has had much success in the sport, said Detroit Boat Club representative Brian Sullivan.

Among Churmka's accomplishments, she's lettered in rowing all four years at . She also earned a gold medal at the Head of Charles Regatta in Boston and has been on the U.S. Junior National Team for three years. She's spent her summers overseas practicing the sport and will compete in London in August, Sullivan said.

Outside of Crew, Churmka is active in her church's youth group, has a black belt in karate and has played other sports: cross country, hockey and softball.

Chrumka is the daughter of Robin and Mike Chrumka and has one brother studying at the University of Michigan. Her plans at Stanford focus on around studying biology and focusing in areas of biomedical or prosthetics, Sullivan said.
