Grosse Pointe Woods Council Approves Initial Payment of Sewer Repair Project

Grosse Pointe Woods City Council approved $240,000 to the city engineer for the $4 million project.

At Monday night's meeting of the Grosse Pointe Woods City Council, the members unanimously approved a contract worth $240,000 with Anderson, Eckstein & Westrick, Inc.—the city's engineer.

In an interview after the meeting, Grosse Pointe Woods Treasurer and Comptroller Dee Ann Irby said that money is just the beginning of a much larger Sewer Revolving Fund project to repair sewers in Grosse Pointe Woods.

That $240,000 is only the first installment to be spent on the SRF project which will cost $4 million in total, Irby said. She added that the $4 million will come from a low-interest loan from the state of Michigan, which AEW will file for.

Part of the $240,000 is "for (AEW) to make an application to the state of Michigan for the loan on our behalf," Irby said.

But Irby added that the $240,000 is also for "engineering functions" performed by AEW and for AEW's meetings with contractors.

Irby said that it is understood that this project will be ongoing and it will continue on in the future, but that city council still needs to approve the project as it progresses in each stage.

"I don't have the authority to spend money without their approval so I can't write a check to AEW ... without them knowing," Irby said.

This "sewer project" thing been going on for years. AEW keeps getting no-bid contracts as the city's "engineers." When's the last time that contract was put out for bids? When's the last time the city attorney(s) contract was put out for bids? These guys all snuggle up to Mayor Novike and his cronies and they return the favors. Taxpayers - and reporters - have got to start asking questions, not just taking the party line every time and making it sound like it's the God's truth.
