In Photos: South Edges North In Another Football Classic
Fourth quarter score pushes Grosse Pointe South past GPN, 18-13.
There are big games within the division.
There are big games in the playoffs.
Then, there is the Grosse Pointe North-Grosse Pointe South football game.
Without exception, this is the contest that players, fans and coaches remember the most after their playing days—the game against Grosse Pointe North, the game against Grosse Pointe South.
Parking was next to impossible.
There was only room to stand to see the game, and the level of excitement was like no other game on the schedule.
And this year's installment of the GPN vs. GPS football game lived up to the hype yet again, with the Blue Devils edging visiting Grosse Pointe North, 18-13, thanks to a fourth-quarter touchdown from quarterback Robby Kish, and a key interception from defensive back Jon Parker in the closing moments of the game.
The game wasn't always that close, however, with South in control throughout the first half, leading 12-0 at the break.
That said, North coach Frank Sumbera rallied the troops at halftime, and this renewed enthusiasm resulted in 13 unanswered points for the Norsemen and a 13-12 lead in the early moments of the final quarter.
Tod Long got North on the board with a third-quarter scoring scamper on a sweep right, while wideout Anthony Sarkis scored on a pass from Dylan Balicki in the early moments of the fourth quarter.
South answered, however, with a Robby Kish touchdown run with just under 8 minutes remaining in the contest.
The score moved the score to 18-13.
North had one last possession in the game and had 1:17 to drive 80 yards, but a Jon Parker interception ended any comeback hopes the Norsemen harbored.
The win moves South to 4-1 overall, while North drops to 2-3 on the season.
