Joe Ricci, a Grosse Pointe Farms resident, is vying to fill a vacant city council seat in a special election Feb. 26.
Grosse Pointe Farms residents Elizabeth 'Liz' Vogel and Joe Ricci are vying for a vacant city council seat in a special election Feb. 26, 2013. The vacancy arose after a longtime councilman died last year following a lengthy battle with cancer.

One of two candidates vying for a vacancy on the Grosse Pointe Farms city council touts his business experience, education and his strength in negotiations.

Joe Ricci, 63, is eager to give back to the community. The long-time Grosse Pointer has owned property in the Farms for more than 30 years and now enjoys time with his sons, their wives and his grandchildren, all of whom also live in the community.

Ricci is "semi-retired," working with his sons at the family's automotive dealerships in Taylor and Clinton Township. He operated an automotive dealership for more than 35 years, handling more than $63 million in sales annually.

In addition to his business experience Ricci believes his educational background in engineering and psychology would also benefit the city if he were elected to council. "I know how things work and how people think."

He also emphasizes his desire to give back to the community: "Most importantly, I am not a politician. I am not looking to use this position as a 'spring board' for bigger things. I do no have an agenda. I'm committed to serving our city."

Ricci answered a series of basic questions via email posed to him by Grosse Pointe Patch. Below is a summary of his responses:

Important issues in the Farms:

  • crime
  • water runoff
  • increasing water rates
  • unfunded employee retirement fund

Issues Ricci would focus on in office:

  • crime--future potential crime in the Farms and increasing crime in the surrounding city
  • water runoff
  • water rates
  • unfunded employee retirement fund

Personal Strength:

  • negotiations due to ability to listen to both sides, ask questions and to make rational decisions "based on facts not emotions."

Committees he'd like to serve on:

  • Beautification, with a focus on Mack and Moross area
  • Ordinance, "because too many homes and businesses need to be 'kept up' with repairs in order to keep our neighborhoods clean and safe."

Previous committee experience:

  • President of the National Jeep Dealer Association
  • President of the Detroit Jeep Dealer Advertising Association, 15 years
  • President of Florida condominium association, 3 years

Personal hobbies:

  • biking
  • working out
  • cooking
  • jigsaw puzzles

What else should voters know:

"I'm level-headed. I have both feet on the ground and I'm not afraid to make a decision."

The special election in Grosse Pointe Farms is Feb. 26. The other candidate seeking office, Elizabeth Vogel, also shared her answers to the same questions.

The candidates will participate in a forum Tuesday Feb. 12 at city hall hosted by the League of Women Voters Grosse Pointe.

Joe epitomizes the self made entrepreneur. He is an extremely effective leader with the ability to bring opposing views to a win-win consensus. His strong background in finance will benefit all residents of GPF.

I bought a Saab from Joe Ricci's dealership on Mack in February of 1998. I was very clear that the reason I was buying the Saab was because of the proximity to the dealership. They sold me the Saab with cheaper wheels than the one I had ordered. The very same week the dealership closed down and I tried to reach Joe Ricci for months about the wheels (at their other dealerships) he rejected all my calls. I will not be voting for somebody who refuses to return calls, especially after they ripped me off.

Julie, we had the same experience with Joe Ricci's dealership when we ordered a Jeep. Everything was manual, even the windows and we were unsuccessful in having the issue resolved. Someone who emphasizes "beautification of the Mack Moross area" should have looked at his own abandoned compound on Mack, as well as on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn first.

A "bait and switch" from a car dealership? I can't believe it...

Jim, I didn't think you were far off base. Different professions have different mentalities. Go read Liar's Poker and compare that to car salesman...

Nothing elitist about it. A salesman eats what he kills. If all he has to sell is crap, he'll find a way to move it, or he'll find another job. Can't blame them for that.

Can the posts get a little more dignified please. If a fact is a fact, fine. And everyone is entitled to their opinion, but is it really necessary to embrace such a decorum ?...

We actually purchased a Jeep from Joe Rici and he bent over backwards to make sure the we were totally satisfied with the deal but we will still vote for Liz.
(FYI) Found this on the Internet.. A Used Car Salesmen
User car salesmen rank very high on the list of the ten most hated jobs.
The stereotypical image of a used car salesman is that of a fast-talking and lying individual whose only objective is to dump a defective car to the first gullible buyer for a high profit, and all that with a smile on his face.

The job of a used car salesman is in reality as difficult and challenging as any other retail salesperson. Used car salesmen help customers identify vehicles according to their taste and budget, and success depends on good knowledge of cars, communication skills, and a pleasant demeanor. Earnings usually come as commissions, and depend on the ability to make sales.. I will never buy a used vehicle from Ray Laethem though ! ! !...Visited three times to look at used cars and this heavy set used Car salesman was Rude and Obnoxious with Sarcasim in his tone of voice and never once smiled. I did purchased a car that week but from another used car dealer.

Ray Laethem Motor Village, Went to the used car department three times in one week and was very disappointed with the one used car salesman. Looks like you have no internal controls on your used car salesman. I described him so you should know who he is. Maybe he should take some anger management classes. He sat there reading his early morning newspaper when I asked a question and he was very rude and appeared he didn't want to be bothered and that was the third I was there. I wasn't window shopping either. The first two times the vehicles were advertised and both times I was told the vehicles were sold even though the second visit was early in the morning at 8:00am and and the car was still on the lot and you wonder why used car salesman have the bad reputation . I will take my business elsewhere.

I was hoping to have heard back from Joe Ricci, the way Tommy heard back from Ray Laethem, but still after 15 years, no luck. I have nothing against car salesmen personally, I have a problem with a man who knows I was ripped off by his company, I called almost daily for months trying to get the wheels I payed for. Last thing we need is another person like that on our city council. Next time I buy a car, I'm going to Ray Laethem's, seems as if they really do care.

Ray Laethem Motor Village, This site is for Joe Ricci comments and it seems you are bothered by opinions. To set the record straight, yes this one salesman was at your original used car. Now that Ray Laethem owns the Dodge dealership I don't know if you know the bad reputation that the Dodge Dealership has/had. Myself and several of my friends refuse to ever go to that dealership because of the high pressure tactics the new car salesman that Ken Meade trained used to sell Dodge vehicle's. Yes, I purchased a car from Pointe Dodge but after that experience I only went to Lochmoor. Some of my older friends had worse experiences than me at the Dodge dealer. Don't know if Ray Laethem replaced the old team but myself and my friends stay away from their too. Just go to the local coffee shop and find out for yourself. Again, don't know why others had any problems with Joe Ricci but to us he was a good Joe.

Tommy, I agree that this thread has gone off into the weeds, we are unfortunately unable to answer or listen in any other forum. We are not bothered by opinions and are sorry that it came across that way. We want to listen so that we can get better. Your earlier comments have caused us to do a deep dive into our used car department and make necessary changes. We did purchase the former Meade Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram dealer next door in June of 2011. We have completely reinvented the dealership, tripled the sales volume, doubled the service volume and more importantly increased customer sales recommendation rate to 97% (as measured by Chrysler). My family and I are life long Grosse Pointers and have been on Mack Avenue for well over 30 years. We love the area and want to keep Mack Avenue thriving. I would love to buy you and your coffee shop friends a cup of joe and discuss how I/We could make Mack Avenue a better place. Sincerely, Jeff Laethem President Ray Laethem Motor Village

Jeff Laethem, First of all I want to congratulate Joe Ricci even though I voted for Liz. I appreciate your feedback on the original Meade dealership. I will make sure I let everyone know that it's not business as usual at the old Ken Meade Dodge Dealership. I know Ray Laethem ran a stellar and a meticulous Pontiac/Buick/GMC New Car Dealership as did Jim Causley whom I ordered my first car, a 1965 Pontiac GTO from Earl Shell the new car salesman. Since Chrysler reinstated the Company Car Retiree Lease Car Program on February 25, 2013 it great news for retirees to have their vehicles serviced at Jeff Laethem Chrysler/ Dodge/ Jeep. Oh, by the way I own and drive nothing but Chrysler and GM products.

Ten years! I paid for expensive alloy wheels and drove my car 10 years without! My good friend Charlie bought it from me, we became friends because of the car. I told him not to vote for Ricci either, he'd have nicer wheels. He lives in the Farms too. As soon as my husband saw that car he said "You've got the wrong wheels!" and from that moment on, nobody from that place would call me back. I still have all the receipts, I'd be happy to be refunded, it still bothers me.
