A Pointes' local celeb, Gretchen Valade, accompanied her attorney to the Grosse Pointe Farms City Council Monday, where Valade's latest endeavor, Morning Glory, was given the go ahead to add alcohol to its menu.

The addition of alcohol will allow the business that opened in May on the Hill to offer coffee liquor drinks and was a part of the business plan from the beginning.  

Valade's attorney Tom Robinson, described plans by Morning Glory, currently a bakery and coffee house in the fashion with a European flare, to sell drinks such as Irish and Spanish coffees as well as table wines .

Valade has purchased a liquor license, now a commodity under Michigan Liquor Control law, from a private holder in another city. Because it was purchased outside of Grosse Pointe Farms, Morning Glory's application does not affect the usual quotas limiting the number of licenses available to Farms businesses.

The council asked about whether the addition of liquor would mean later hours. Robinson said the plan is to enhance the menu, not become a late-night bar, though if business dictated it may extend closing time from 9 p.m. - 11 p.m.

"It's not going to be the way you get alcohol most places," Robinson said. 

The council thanked Valade, a descendant of the Carhartt clothing company, founder and owner of the Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe on The Hill and record label, Mack Avenue Records, and whose philanthropy is legend, for all she's done for the Farms.

Should Morning Glory ever be sold or change owners otherwise, the council would have to approve a transfer in the license. This addition will make it the only coffee shop in the the Pointes to offer liquor. 

Pastry Chef Amy Gallagher said it'll likely be a few weeks before the business is ready to serve alcohol as they need to change some things around inside and actually purchase it. She is pleased the license is approved.
