Students clean an area behind bushes lining the edge of the building Tuesday at Grosse Pointe North High School. They were among about 60 students who helped with the project created by the Building Consortium Professional Leadership Committee.

Grosse Pointe North High School teachers and students gathered in front of the building this week for Go Green North day in which they split into smaller groups to clean up the grounds.

The activity was the brainchild of a teacher's organization, the Building Cohesion Professional Leadership Committee, said teacher Jackie Sage-Phillips.

The group gathered outside the school after an early dismissal on Tuesday. Sage-Phillips estimated that 25 teachers and staff participated while another 60 students helped.

Each participant was given a set of gloves and each small group was given a garbage bag. Then they dispersed to every corner of the grounds to clean up the school grounds.

Ultimately, they filled about 50 bags and many of the staff members and students grabbed lunch at the Green Zebra, a food vendor parked in the lot for the event, Sage-Phillips said.

Organizers were pleased with the turnout, she said.
