Dozens of residents gathered along Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe Shores Sunday afternoon for the parade that kicked off the official 100th birthday party for the city.
Celebrations continued Sunday by Grosse Pointe Shores residents and officials during the official birthday party at Osius Park. The day began with a parade along Lake Shore Road from the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House to the park.
In addition to live music from a bagpiper band and the South Lake High School Marching Band, the parade includes many local celebrities, such as the National Coney Island chef and Big Boy.
Several elected officials including Grosse Pointe Shores councilmen Ted Kedzierski, Dan Schulte, Brian Geraghty, David Galbenski, State Representative Tim Bledsoe and U.S. Representative Hansen Clarke were in the parade. Clarke walked next to a car that he was suppose to be riding in to shake hands with those watching and introduce himself.
Shores Mayor James Cooper also walked next to the parade waving and thanking people for attending.
The event concluded with a birthday cake float blasting Happy Birthday. Jets flew over the parade from Detroit's Gold Cup races.
On Saturday the city held an ice cream social on the grounds of the municipal building and on Friday, Shores residents were invited to attend a private reception at the Ford House followed by music from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and fireworks over Lake St. Clair.
