Police Blotter: Wheels, Rims Stolen From Car
The following information is gathered from the Departments of Public Safety of the Grosse Pointes. Arrests do not indicate conviction.
Grosse Pointe Woods police are investigating the theft of four tires and rims from a 2007 Lincoln MKZ parked in the 2100 block of Lennon Aug. 2. The owner came out in the morning to find his car on blocks and the tires missing. Blocks from an unknown location and from the owner's lawn were used to prop up the car, according to a report.
Business Given Special Attention Due to Suspicious Behavior
Grosse Pointe Woods gave special attention to Radio Shack Aug. 2 after employees reported suspicious activity. A man repeatedly called the store throughout the day to inquire about iPhones and then a rusty, gold late 1990s Buick kept driving by slowly with two men closely checking out the store. When an employee took the trash out the men were sitting in the car near the rear of the store and the car made another drive by when the responding officer was gathering information for the report. The officer tried to find the car in the area, but did not. The store was given special attention through closing time, according to a report.
Attempted Car Theft Interrupted by Police
Grosse Pointe Woods police interrupted an attempted car theft near AAA on Mack Avenue July 30. Employees in the building saw the men ducking in and out of a car behind the business and called police. The employees went out to the parking lot and two men drove away. Responding officers found the other two men they witnessed tampering with a car walking and stopped them. One of the men was 17 years old from Detroit. The other was from North Carolina. Both were charged with attempted vehicle theft. Several tools were confiscated during the arrest, according to a report.
Beer Theft Ends in Arrest
Grosse Pointe Woods police arrested a man Aug. 7 for stealing beer from Kroger on Mack Avenue after the store's loss prevention team called to report the crime. Responding officers found that the loss prevention officer had the man in custody at the store. He reported to officers that the man entered, went to the beer section, grabbed four 24-packs of Budweiser, two 12-packs of Corona bottles and two 18-packs of Corona bottles and then left without paying. The loss prevention officer confronted the man. The estimated value of the beer he was trying to steal was about $165, according to a report.
Heroin Discovered During Traffic Stop
Grosse Pointe Woods police arrested a 31-year-old Toledo, Ohio woman Aug. 5 about 2:30 a.m. for possession of heroin after she was stopped for not having proper tail lights. The woman did not have a driver's license on her and was arrested related to that. During a search of her, officers found nothing but during a search of her car they found a makeup bag, which she had previously not given them permission to search, had five packets of herion, a spoon with residue, a bottle with residue, two syringes and two and a half pink pills, later identified as Adderall. A white pill found on the floor of the car was determined to be Xanax. The woman was charged with possession of heroin, possession of narcotic equipment, possession of prescription drugs, driving without an operator's license and having no operator's license on her while driving, according to a report.
Former Employee Arrested for Trespassing, Disturbing the Peace
Grosse Pointe Woods police arrested a 23-year-old Kalamazoo man July 3 for trespassing at Salvatore Scallopini. The man is a former employee who was asked by the restaurant and the Woods police to not return. He returned, sat at the bar and requested to speak with someone about why he was fired. A manager called police and explained that he left the bar when he found out the police had been called. The man was found outside the restaurant when officers arrived, according to a report.
Student ID, Cash Stolen from Wallet Left at Park
A Grosse Pointe Woods resident reported his student identification and $15 stolen from his wallet after he accidentally left it behind at Sweeney Park. When he returned, he found his wallet but it was missing those items, according to a report filed Aug. 2.
Pair of Harrassing Men Under Investigation
Grosse Pointe Woods detectives are investigating a pair of men who have been harassing a resident for a number of years after they began calling his house Aug. 2. The pair threatened to kill the man and his family about a year ago and both have threatening posts on Facebook including pictures of the recent mass shooting in Colorado, according to a report.
Drunk Driving Arrests
City of Grosse Pointe police arrested a 56-year-old resident July 6 for drunken driving during a traffic stop initiated for another offense. The man was stopped near Charlevoix and Cadieux roads about 8:45 p.m. He had a 0.12 percent blood alcohol level and failed field sobriety tests related to reciting the alphabet, according to a report.
City of Grosse Pointe police also arrested a 57-year-old New Palestine man for drunk driving after he ran a red light in front of a police officer. The man could not complete several field sobriety tests correctly and had a 0.22 percent blood alcohol level. The man refused to take the formal breath test at the police station so he was taken to a hospital for a blood draw authorized by the judge. The man's 14-year-old son was in the car and his mother was contacted to pick him up. The man was charged with operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level of 0.17 percent or higher--an elevated offense allowing for more jail time in sentencing if a judge sees fit.
Traffic Stop for Speeding Ends in Possession of Marijuana Arrest
City of Grosse Pointe police arrested a 36-year-old Oak Park woman and a 30-year-old Southfield woman Aug. 4 for possession of marijuana after an officer stopped them for driving 60 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone near Jefferson and Cadieux. The woman were asked to step from the vehicle and gave containers of marijuana to the officer when it was clear canine officer Raleigh would be called to the scene. Both were charged with possession of marijuana. Officers took 10 grams of marijuana and a Land Rover into police evidence.
