Police Search for Burglar, Richard "Locks In"

Richard Elementary School was placed on a lock-in Thursday while Grosse Pointe Farms police searched for a man who broke into a business on the Hill. The man was not found.

The same man Grosse Pointe Farms police believe is responsible for a break-in  last month made a re-appearance Thursday on the Hill, according to an alert sent to the community.

A business owner happened upon the man going through her purse and confronted him, spurring him to run. The man ran out of the business and into the bank drive through area Thursday, according to the alert.

Responding officers, who arrived within less than a minute, searched the area but could not find him. It is believed he may have left the Hill in a car, according to the alert.

Police alerted Richard school officials about the search and recent crime and the school was placed on lock-in mode, which means no one is able to access the building and the children are kept inside. Their day is not interrupted but they are not allowed to go outside.

Upon looking at surveillance video, police believe the burglar is the same man who last month broke in to several businesses and stole items, according to the alert.

Farms police are asking for help in identifying the man, who is described as about 5-foot-11 to 6-foot-2, white with blue eyes, a medium build and cracked teeth. He was last seen wearing a black winter hat.

Anyone with information about the man is asked to call Grosse Pointe Farms police at 313-885-2100.

Too often these reports don't specifically name the business that was robbed and choose to just give the general area, the Hill, 19000 block of Mack, etc. if we knew the name of the business and the approximate time of the incident maybe someone that was nearby at that time could remember seeing something. If I was at Jumps and The Hill was robbed there is less of a chance I saw something but if I had walked out of Rite Aid and the story stated it was that Rite Aid which was robbed I might remember seeing someone walk past me or something. Is there a reason to not name the business?

I know it is winter and many of us have the winter hat going but don't ya think the shop keep person should have had the radar going on this guy prior to him going thru her purse??? I tell you if I owned a shop I would have the old peace maker right behind the counter. This is getting crazy!!!! These cats probably have just armed themselves from the Windmill rd break ins so we are probably going to see more!

Bob Frapples is right. I've never understood the reasoning behind the vagueness of these reports as to the location of criminal incidents. The GP News often does the same thing in its so-called public safety reports. But why? Indeed, a person nearby when an event takes place might remember something of value if the location is pinpointed.

I totally agree with Rich, why not use some of public safety budget? If the Grosse Pointe Farms Police can afford new cars just for catching people going 5 over the speed limit, shouldn't they be able to equip store owners with Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson perhaps??

I also heard first hand from one of the business employees that police have been extremely vague with them as well. Not returning phone calls and not providing details into the investigation. Pathetic.

That could be a procedural thing, as commenting too freely on an open investigation is generally considered poor form.
