Shores Council Hires Interim City Manager
In a 4-2 vote, the Grosse Pointe Shores council approved an interim city manager whose name will be familiar to many in the Grosse Pointes and beyond. He is slated to begin March 20.
Mark Wollenweber will serve as the interim city manager for Grosse Pointe Shores after the council approved his appointment Monday during a special meeting.
Wollenweber managed Grosse Pointe Woods for five years and more recently served as the interim city manager in Ferndale as they searched for a permanent replacement. He retired from St. Clair Shores after several years as its city manager.
The Shores will pay Wollenweber a pro-rated amount of an annual $80,000 salary for up to four months as officials search for a new city manager. He will also receive a four percent contribution into a deferred compensation plan, such as a 401 account, according to a letter of agreement Wollenweber signed Monday night after the meeting.
He will not receive any other compensation or benefits, which he said is not a problem because he receives those from St. Clair Shores.
Shores council members voted 4 to 2 to approve Wollenweber as the interim city manager after much discussion about whether the council should have "shopped around" more to fill the temporary position.
Wollenweber said he was called by several residents in the community and then by Mayor Ted Kedzierski about filling the interim position. He will begin officially March 20 upon returning from a vacation he already had scheduled.
Councilmen Dan Schulte and Robert Barrette voted against the contract, both clarifying they were not voting against Wollenweber but against the process in which he was chosen.
Councilwoman Kay Felt emphasized the need to fill the position and to keep city business moving. She also emphasized that it is a temporary position and more effort needs to be put into the search for the permanent search.
Kedzierski said the need to have a person in place quickly is important as all of the department heads as well as the council members are trying to work together to ensure no city business "falls through the cracks" while the city is without a manager.
The council members did alter his original agreement to say "up to four months" after Felt inquired with Wollenweber about whether he would be willing to shorten his temporary term with the Shores should they find a permanent manager more quickly. He agreed.
Wollenweber is replacing Brian Vick, who resigned from the position after the council asked that he leave last month. Vick's last day was Friday.
In addition to hiring Wollenweber, the council voted unanimously to begin its search for a permanent replacement.
After the meeting, Wollenweber said he is looking forward to helping in the Shores. He knows there are several big topics, including a challenging budget with a projected $500,000 shortfall. He said he is looking forward to working with the department heads and will offer help to alleviate some of the service problems Shores residents have experienced with the non-emergency dispatch line since the city consolidated its dispatch with Grosse Pointe Farms.
The problem has been identified as old hardware in the Shores and Wollenweber said he has a contact with AT&T who should be able to help.
In addition to his years of municipal work, Wollenweber has been active with several organization throughout the state including Michigan Municipal League. He has made contacts through various roles, such as a municipal counseling program he helped develop to offer advice to municipal employees or help transition outgoing managers. All of those contacts, Wollenweber said, are likely to help him in his new interim position in the Shores.

Good choice. Mark is a good manager and quite capable.

Hmmm...fine choice? I think not. Let's see- a journeyman manager looking to pad his already ridiculous pension. This 'bargain" is happening simultaneously with paying Brain Vick SIX months severance. All on a budget defecit? What a sound decision! Can't the people who work in the city office pick up the slack until a permanant city manager is hired? It sure sounds like a decision only the fine folks at the soon to be bankrupt city of Detroit would love.

I agree with Brian Hunt. I've know Mark Wollenweber for more than 25 years, both when I was a journalist and when I served four years on the Woods City Council after retirement when he was Woods' city manager. The guy knows his stuff and is well suited to be a stand-in temporary city manager for our often contentious neighbors to the east. The Shores will be in good hands while they search for a permanent replacement for Brian Vick.

Great job by Mayor Kedzierski to replace Brian Vick with such a highly regarded and experienced city manager! And for less than half the price it was costing Shores taxpayers for Brian Vick. That already takes care of about 20% of the $500K deficit.
Pete Waldmeir calls the Shores contentious! Isn't that like the pot calling the kettle black???

Mr Waldmeir,
Democracy isn't always friendly, and it's sometimes perceived as "contentious". But therein lies its majesty and part of the reason why we love our country. As a long-time resident of Grosse Pointe Shores, I prefer to consider our residents as "passionate" - and not contentious. And I am very proud to see that slowly, but surely, our residents are beginning to come together and agree on far more than we disagree. The fact that great neighbors like Drs Hunt and Lee agree on Mr Wollenweber's appointment is but one example.
As an aside, I met Mr Wollenweber for the first time last evening and came away extremely impressed. I commend our new Mayor and Council for a job very, very well done!

Methinks the gentleman doth protest too much. One man's majesty quite often is another man's contention. I figured that out and I'm not even a doctor.

I must have responded to a different Pete Waldmeir than I thought, if he is taking issue with the term "contentious." I thought I was responding to a post by the former Detroit News columnist who used to make a living writing sarcastic and inflammatory columns on a daily basis that went after Mayor Coleman Young (who he contemptuously referred to as"Hizzoner"), Governor Granholm, or any other local politico who offended his sensitivity! Why didn't that Pete Waldmeir even once challenge Detroit's mayor to a fistfight? The same Pete Waldmeir about who the Freep once said "never met a politician he was afraid to challenge via the mighty pen."
If contentious was not the right adjective to describe that Pete Waldmeir, I can't for the life of me think of a better one. And as Dr. Rahi so eloquently stated above, contentiousness has long been a part of politics. In fact of there had not been a long series of contentious debates in the Continental Congress or the Constitutional Convention, our Founding Fathers would likely not have done a good of a job as they did hammering out the documents that are the basis of our democratic government.

Hey, Doc, all this over one word? Get a life. Go empty a bedpan or give somebody an enema and make yourself feel good. And get your facts straight. I worked for the Detroit News for 53 years...not the Free Press. And it was Billy Bonds at the height of his drinking days who wanted to fight old Coleman, not me. I loved Hizonner. Cried when he retired. I still had one kid to put thru college. Incidentally, since you've chosen to attack me personally with slanderous misinformation, be advised that I've got a few adjectives to describe pompous jerks like you and none of them are as mild as "contentious."

I agree with Mr. Waldmeir. Sometimes GPS politics can be contentious. No need to crucify Pete for stating an opinion. After all, that is what our founding fathers fought so hard for, right?

Pete: Please read my post again, it clearly identifies you as a former Detroit News columnist. My quote about you was from a Carol Cain Free Press article "Ex-journalists have fill of politics." Where did I ever say you worked for the Freep?
Sorry, I did mix you up with Billy Bonds. My mistake. After thinking about it a little more, wasn't it actually the Honorable Coleman Young who said he wanted to mix it up with you in a back alley down in Jamaica when you followed him down there? Mea culpa for not remembering exactly who was the one who wanted the fisticuffs.
Mayor Young's quote about what he would have liked to have done is a great one, but is a little too colorful to be directly posted on the Patch. Interested readers can find it right near the end of this on line biography of Mayor Young:

I sure hope sane heads prevail. I have know Mark from our days in College and working on joint situation. He is a gentleman and strong leader. He knows his stuff. GPS needs to get back to the business of running a City. Ask a retiree with excellant business background to run the City. I am sure thye would be glad to do so for the money being offered.

Thanks, Chuck. Let's not let the screwballs detract from Marks' value to a city in turmoil which, obviously (by the 4-2 vote) was involved in "contention" even over his appointment. And please, would someone remind the pompous doctor What's-his-name to heed the wise critic's age-old advise: "The pen is mightier than the sword, unless you're in a sword fight."

Pete Waldmeir. Just an observation. Why are you so angry, rude and antagonistic in your manner and response toward others? "self praise is no recommendation". "By recognizing a favorable opinion of yourself, and taking pleasure in it, you in a measure give yourself and your peace of mind into the keeping of another, of whose attitude you can never be certain..."

What, indeed.
I must reluctantly withdraw from this enriching discussion now while I lock myself in my room and contemplate the deeper meaning of my navel. Not an ounce of contention there. Only a couple of grams of lint...
