How about a maternity and children's gear shop? (strollers, car seats, high hairs, etc)

The store front is located in the Village in Grosse Pointe.

On the off chance that someone here sees this and might be interested why not list the two other most important details (besides location) of the site: square footage and price. Lot size for an attached building, I think, is not important at all.

I agree with Jason R., maternity and baby is needed in the GP area.

I miss a unique gift store, like we had in "Something Special" on the Hill. Especially since we're losing Ace also, which I've used for gifts and housewares frequently.

I think a Justice store would do well and is needed here in the Village.

Good space, good locations, good size. Sure bets, in this order, are:
(1) Quality children/baby clothes store with shoes
(2) High-end apothocary with make-up and skin care products
(3) Unique gift store
(4) Haberdashery

Any men's wear retailer is going to look hard before going into that space with Jos. Banks and Brooks Brothers so close. Yes, I understand you're talking about a higher-end product but recently those retailers haven't found a lot of traction. Notably Hickey's, Sterr, Young's.

The problem with these smaller stores is that they're small businesses and have limited pricing power with the landlord. They end up paying too much rent and having to charge higher prices and more value driven GP'ers end up going to TJ Maxx.

Agreed that high end men's is tough. That's why I'd put it last on the list. If it had a cache, and became a more of a destination, then I think it would work. If it capitalizes on the hipster "nostalgia" trend, while extremely annoying, would be good publicity and would bring in a wider range of purchasers. I think Hickey's ended before the recent trend to harken back to the past, handcrafted goods, etc. But it has to be done right. I also think the rent is lower than in the past, and the landlord may be willing to work with the right tenant.

Look, I just don't see it working unless you can get some scale. I mean, do I hate that have to get my emerald green pants with the little blue whales embroidered on them over the internet? Of course I do. Do I wish there was a place in the Village/Hill/Patch that could provide me said pants, along with other key items like madras anything, Rainbow flip flops, and vast quanities of seersucker at reasonable prices? Yes, of course. But alas, I don't see it happening.

Though, it does suggest an interesting retailing concept for the area. A preppy super-store, with not just clothes but other things, like sailing gear, proper hunting outfits. Equesterian wear and jockeys for our front lawns and other home goods! It would be magical.

Overall, I'm disappointed in The Village shopping district. Most of what's there can be found at any suburban strip mall from Livonia to Auburn Hills. I would prefer to see locally owned shops and restaurants. An independent book store would be great.

The article asks, "What do you want" in this retail space, GP For Life. I don't really give a rip about the "young, hip, go-getters." I'm none of the above, I have no pretensions to any of that, and they can speak for themselves anyway. So yes, I want an independent bookstore--something along the lines of John King's smaller shop in Ferndale would be great. We do have a wonderful library system, but libraries don't take the place of bookstores--and vice versa. I think Borders' departure left a huge hole in Village. I don't think we can sustain another bookstore that size, but a smaller one might be viable. Though really, I'd be happy with almost any locally owned business going into the space. What I really don't want to see is another generic big-box or franchise business going there, whether it's a drug store, a clothing store, or a restaurant.

We need a good gun range in the area.

We need Maclean and Eakin Booksellers in Petoskey to open a down-state location. I bet it would do really well if it included gifts too.

I have to agree that we need a good gun range in the area, but GP for Life is right, the Village is not the correct area for that! I would love to see locally owned and operated shops in the village, as it has been in years past. I am assuming that is not the case these days because locally owned shops have not been able to make a go of it. Sad. What the village needs is something trendy, useful, and new. What that is? I have no idea. But good luck to whoever does open up in the space. Hopefully it will not be another drugstore/liquor store/bar/restaurant/coffee place. We have enough of those!
