Donald Mattes,

  • Accomplishment: Earning the Peter Moskaluk - Gordon Morlan Science Encouragement Prize.
  • Key to Success: These students were recognized for their demonstrated interest in science. Each of the three have worked on science projects during the school year that went above and beyond middle and high school science projects. Parcells and North alum Dr. David D. Howell, an oncologist and professor in the Radiation Oncology Department of University of Michigan Medical School, created the award in honor of two of his science teachers whom he said made an impact on his life. Both of the teachers, Peter Moskaluk and Gordon Morlan are retired from Grosse Pointe Schools. "(This award) is in honor of my science teachers and to honor all of the kids who dig science," Howell said. Science is an important field of which students should take interest and these three were named this year's winners. The students were nominated by their teachers and an independent panel reviewed submissions and selected the winners. The middle schoolers received $250 and Morrison received $500 in addition to having their names put on a plaque that will be posted in the schools. During the award ceremony this week, Lisa Vreede, vice president of the Grosse Pointe Foundation for Public Education, listed off each of the students activities and science interests as well as what their teachers said about them individually.
