Evan Kole may not have super powers, but he is now on a first-name basis with Captain America. See how interior designers get clever with books galore in various rooms at the Junior League of Detroit Grosse Pointe Shores' home tour, which opens today.
Books seem to be everywhere. Not only are they in homes and on bookshelves, but paperbacks and hardcovers aplenty are also adorning window displays at apparel shops and boutiques and in fashion designer and home-furnishings ad campaigns. There's even book-page wallpaper. Books are wearable, too. Kate Spade, in fact, introduced clutches that replicate classic tomes, from Romeo and Juliet to Emma to The Importance of Being Earnest. Is this our way of holding on to physical books in our Nook-ish, Kindle-ized world of “E?” Perhaps, and that may be why many of the designers at the Junior League of Detroit's (JLD) 2012 Show House used books in a variety of displays. The Grosse Pointe Theatre's musical production features more than 20 dance routines and 30 actors/dancers. 'Hairspray' ends the theatre's 64th season.
The choreographer for Grosse Pointe Theatre's performance of Hairspray has been working on the dances for two years leading up to its opening, which is Sunday May 6 at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. Director and Choreographer Timothy P. Higgins, of Birmingham, reasearched the musical production and worked with more than 120 people who auditioned for the show. Ultimately, there are 30 cast members in the show, which closes the theatre's 64th season. Hairspray is the story of a teenager living in Baltimore, Maryland in 1962 who aspires to become a dancer on a popular television show. The artwork of 24 University Liggett and South High School students will be displayed at the Detroit Public Library.
The artwork of several Grosse Pointe South High School and University Liggett School students will be on display at the main branch of the Detroit Public Library. The 24 students join dozens of others from Michigan's 13th Congressional district in the Artistic Discovery Contest, a nationwide high school arts competition sponsored by the members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The 2012 competition is co-chaired by U.S. Rep. Hansen Clarke, whose 13th District includes the Grosse Pointes. In addition to being a lawmaker, Clarke holds a bachelor's degree in fine arts for painting from Cornell University. “As an artist and lawmaker, I deeply appreciate the dedication, effort and sacrifice required to create works of art," Clarke said. Soon, the Junior League of Detroit (JLD) will open the doors to its 2012 Designers’ Show House, located at 22 Webber Place in Grosse Pointe Shores. The massive 10,304-square-foot house, which was built in 1928 as the home of Oscar Webber, nephew of Joseph L. Hudson, is undergoing a magical transformation, thanks to design specialists who hail from everywhere from Ferndale, South Lyon, Plymouth, Royal Oak and Birmingham to Rochester, Clinton Township, Grosse Pointe and Troy. In a couple of weeks, the Junior League of Detroit (JLD) will open the doors to its 2012 Designers’ Show House, located at 22 Webber Place in Grosse Pointe Shores. The house will also feature fully landscaped gardens, a boutique, café and a greenery garden area, with items for sale. For several weeks, dozens of interior designers, painters, electricians, maintenance professionals, boutique staff and more have been coming and going at the massive 10,304-square-foot house, which was built in 1928 as the home of Oscar Webber, nephew of Joseph L. The Family Center of Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods has extended the deadline for registration in the Lego Artist Challenge. The event happen April 21 and artists may now register through April 19.
Students in the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods are encouraged to create art from legos in the Family Center's Lego Artists Challenge. Pre-registration is required and officials extended the deadline because spring break. Registration may be completed online through the Family Center's website or through the form attached to this story. There is a $15 entry fee and the lego creations must be dropped off at Barnes Early Childhood Center Friday April 20 between 4 to 7 p.m. The judging and winners will be annoucned Saturday April 21.
