On Tuesday, June 12, I had the pleasure to address nearly 150 members of the Grosse Pointe Senior Men's Club at the War Memorial on a project near and dear to my heart -- Freedom Center.Freedom Center is our new military lounge adjacent to Gate A43 in the McNamara (Delta) Terminal at Detroit Metro. Opened officially on Veterans Day 2011, Freedom Center has welcomed more than 10,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines, as well as their family members and veterans of all our Armed Forces. Normal operations are from 6 in the morning until 9 in the evening, but on many occasions our great volunteer staff has kept the lounge open all night for stranded military guests. During my talk, I encouraged all Grosse Pointe veterans to visit Freedom Center during their travels. Additional details are available on our website www.MIfreedomcenter.org. If you would like to make a financial contribution, this can be easily accomplished with an on-line donation. Or, if you would like to become a volunteer, an application can be downloaded. As a founding member of Freedom Center, I welcome any opportunity to speak to community groups on this important service being provided to our military travelers. If you would like to have me talk to your group, please contract me at 313-610-5600.

Good work, Capt. McCandless, USNR. You are a credit to the naval service - which is a major compliment coming from a U.S. Marine veteran. Yes, I know that the Marines are nothing more than just another arm of the U.S. Navy. But some swab jockies are better than others and even superior beings like Marines have to acknowledge that fact! Semper Fi.
