USS DETROIT (LCS 7) UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN WISCONSIN
The U.S. Navy's newest warship, the USS DETROIT (LCS 7), is quickly taking shape in Lockheed Martin's Marinette Marine shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin. I am proud and excited to chair the USS DETROIT (LCS 7) BLUE & GOLD COMMITTEE, joined by a dozen other members of the Metropolitan Detroit Council, Navy League of the United States, including Grosse Pointe Shores resident John Peracchio, our vice chairman.
Our committee is hard at work to support the men and women who will form the Blue and Gold crews of this FREEDOM class Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). The DETROIT's keel was layed this past November and Mrs. Carl Levin is the ship's sponsor. The ship will be launched early next year and is slated for commissioning in the summer of 2015.
The BLUE & GOLD COMMITTEE, formed this past December, has already engaged in a number of projects. These include creating a USS DETROIT blog; establishing a dialog with Mrs. Levin, Navy officials and the newly appointed PCO (Prospective Commanding Officer) of DETROIT, Commmander Michael R. Wohnhass, USN, as well as initiating discussions with the Detroit Historical Society on a new exhibit on "Ships Named Detroit."

Congratulations to John McCandless, Capt. USNR (Retired) for spearheading yet another project to improve the well-being of our nation's servicemen and women. John's a Grosse Pointe Woods resident and former Toyota public relations executive who is a founding member of the highly-successful Freedom Center project at Detroit Metro Airport, which last year hosted more than 30,000 in-transit service members, veterans and their families during their layovers in Detroit. In the past, John also has organized trips aboard the USS Michigan SSBN 727, a nuclear submarine stationed in Bangor, ME, to benefit the Michigan's Blue and Gold crews, their families and supporters.

Hey, that's Bangor, WA as in Washington State. Not Bangor, Maine. Got my Bangors mixed up. Also, the USS Michigan is no longer an SSBN, which is the designation for a long-range ballistic missile launch pad commonly known as a "boomer." The Michigan was reconfigured for troop support missions about 4 years ago.
