Let Fou d'amour Make You Dinner

Pastry-baking, meal-making duo and their staff turn out fresh-made dinners, carryout casseroles and unforgettable scones from their quaint cafe in Grosse Pointe Park.

If Fou d’ amour, a bakery and café whose recipes wind up on dozens, if not hundreds, of Pointers’ tables each week, had a motto or a tagline there would be no need to take a fancy or French approach. For a business whose name means Crazy in Love, it could be simply: Dinner driving you crazy? Let us handle it! It’s what Michele Makowski and Darcy Towns, partners and co-owners of the bakery, catering and dinner-take out spot that turns five this year, do nearly every day of the week. That is make dinner for someone else, not their own families. Each has two children, each work long days and each would love having a fresh meal ready to go. “We’re crazy in love with what we do,” says Makowski. “We know what we would want to feed our families …

Grosse Pointe Siblings Eager for Crowdfunding

They invented the Gorilla Stand that will hold iPhones or an iPad for movie watching while in bed, on an airplane or even in a hotel room. The trio is trying to raise funding to produce the product with the goal of selling it.

A trio of Grosse Pointe siblings is working to market their invention: the Gorilla Stand, which is a "durable and stylish dual stand to accomodate an iPhone and an iPad (and most tablets)." The project began about a year ago with Lego and Kinnex models and has evolved into a working proteje made out of durable plastic. Ryan Moran, 28, watches a lot of movies on his iPhone in his bedroom before going to sleep, which generated the idea for the invention, he said, explaining he realized he was always holding it up and moving it to make it easier to view. The two leg Gorilla Stand folds flat for easy packing and travel and will sit on the user's lap or on a desk or table top. It also features a sound reflector, which helps amplify the sound of…

Artists Begin Decorating Grosse Pointe Perch

Following a media preview party at Prop Arts Studio in Detroit, more than 30 perch for the Grosse Pointe Get Hooked campaign were picked up by or delivered to artists.

The artists selected to decorate the perch that will dot the streets of the Grosse Pointes later this summer will begin the creative process after taking possession of the roughly four-foot fish this week. Many of the artists picked up their fish Thursday following a media preview event also attended by the sponsors and the local artists selected. The remainder of the fish are being delivered to the artists today, Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jennifer Boettcher said. Similar to the frogs featured in the Pointes several years ago, the perch are being used in a campaign to promote the Grosse Pointes for shopping, supporting local businesses and as a fun feature to draw people to explore the area while visiting each of…

West Park Market Opens in GP Park Saturday

Officials are preparing for opening day of the ninth annual West Park Farmer's Market that lines Kercheval Avenue in Grosse Pointe Park. Opening day is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

West Park Farmers Market Manager Jennifer Meldrum will be cleaning up Kercheval Avenue in the next few days, planting flowers and readying the stretch of Grosse Pointe Park that will be transformed Saturday for start of the ninth annual season. The market will feature some new vendors this year as well as those Grosse Pointers have come to love and to look for on Saturday mornings, Meldrum said. Among the items one can find at the market are: locally grown vegetables and fruits, flowers, baked goods, jewelry, gardening and wooden wares, candles, birdhouses and wildlife goods, oils and vinegars and more. This is the first season Meldrum has had to create a waiting list for one specific kind of vendor: jewelry, she said, explaining she's had…

The fruits and vegetables were outstanding last year. I can't wait to shop there again, it gets better every year. Everything was always so fresh and priced very reasonable. I will really miss Mulier's Market this year. I always enjoyed going in there to buy a piece of meat to accompany my beautiful produce.   more ›

Gifts for Mom: How to Pick the Perfect Plant

What do plant-loving moms really want for Mother's Day? Patio flowers with exotic fragrances, trendy vertical gardens, a 'greens' garden, and ... a great big pile of mulch with all hands on deck.

Seriously, some mothers have reported that one of their best gifts ever was a pile of mulch and some extra hands for spreading it! Here, some plant- and garden-enthusiast gift ideas …

Village Toy Expands Tweens Division of Store

El's Boutique began as a small section of Village Toy two years ago. It did so well, the owner has expanded it and it now fills about half of the store.

After 25 years in the toy business, Grosse Pointer Ellen Durand has expanded the merchandise offerings at Village Toy to include accessories, jewelry and other trendy items popular with tweens. Durand began offering tween products about two years ago in a small section of Village Toy. That portion of the business grew to the point that Durand expanded the tween's division of Village Toy, named El's Boutique, earlier this year. El's now fills about half of the store and it features a wide-variety of accessories, from bedroom furniture appealing to tweens, desk and locker accessories, jewelry, crafts, sparkly nail polish and more. Many of the items are targeted for the tween girl, but much of the merchandise is appropriate for ages 10 …
