Fun Run and Walk Sponsored by the Grosse Pointe North Girls Cross Country Team to Help Fight Cancer
The Grosse Pointe North High School Girls Cross Country Team will hold a Fun Run and Walk from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, October 6, 2012. While no pre-registration or entry fee are required, all donations will be accepted, with all proceeds going directly to the American Cancer Society. The event will take place at the Grosse Pointe North High School track and surrounding baseball fields, located at 707 Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods.
The event will open with an address from Carmen Kennedy, Grosse Pointe North’s former Athletic Director, and now principal of South Lake High School in St. Clair Shores. She will be speaking about her personal battle with breast cancer. The day she left Grosse Pointe North and accepted her new job at South Lake was the day she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“After her talk we will begin a walk or run in honor of, in memory of, or in dedication to people with cancer,” said Cross Country Coach Scott Cooper. “At the same time we will try to raise funds for research,” he added.
In preparation for the Run and Walk, the Cross Country team members decorated T-shirts to promote awareness for cancer research and to honor loved ones who have been touched by cancer. They will wear their shirts to school to publicize the Run and Walk, and will be sporting their shirts on Saturday during the event. The girls will also have homemade baked goods available for purchase or donation to help their fundraising efforts.
“Anyone is welcomed to attend. Donate a dollar or donate $1000. Or, just come and be with the team as we walk and run together,” said Cooper.
