Bites Nearby: Park Grill Mediterranean

For this week's Bites Nearby, we visit a fairly new Grosse Pointe Park restaurant. Park Grill Mediterranean has been open for a year and has filled the Mediterranean cuisine void in the Grosse Pointe area.

Each week, Grosse Pointe Patch editors and readers will pick a great restaurant either in town or nearby whose cuisine is considered to reign supreme.

Here's this week's choice:

Park Grill Mediterranean

Overview: Open seven days, Park Grill brings Mediterranean food to an area that was sorely missing it.  The menu says Park Grill purchases most of their meat and produce from local farmers and businesses.  They are doing what they can to keep money in Michigan.

Salads:  Greek, Caesar, fattoush, and tabbouli are available. The fshati salad ($3 small or $6.50 larger) is an Albanian chef's salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, green peppers, olives, feta cheese, oregano and olive oil. Very similar to a Greek Village salad, fshati is a change of pace from the ubiquitous Greek or Caesar salads.

Gourmet Wraps: As is the case with the vast majority of Mediterranean restaurants, sandwiches are served on pita bread. Both vegetarians and carnivores will be happy with the selections. From hummus and Greek salad to a gyro pita, there are flavors and fillings for every taste.

Entrees: Two prices for each dish: lunch and dinner with no option over $10.50. Combos are available for sharing. Qofte (Arabic spelling kafta/kufta) can be ordered with either chicken or beef and pork. The qofte is charred yet moist and well-seasoned. Grab a hunk of meat with the pita, dip it in the toum (garlic sauce) and then the rice—voila, the perfect bite.

Dinner plates are served with toum and rice pilaf. The rice pilaf is more in line with Greek tradition with peas served atop the rice.

Sides: Hummus has a lemony punch that so many places go easy on. There is enough garlic to scare away a vampire, too. Other less familiar dishes like fergese and eggplant spread (not baba ganoush) are also available.

Dessert: The only dessert on the menu can be found under the "Sides" section. The rice pudding is made in house.

Signature Dish: The feast for 4 or 8 features just about every item on the menu and is very reasonably priced.  Feed four for $44 or eight for $80.
