Bites Nearby: Salvatore Scallopini

This week's Bites takes us to Salvatore Scallopini, a family friendly Italian restaurant that is both casual and elegant.

Bored with the same old dining out destinations you've been going to for years? Hungering for a new fabulous food experience?

Try this week's choice for Bites Nearby:

Yes, Salvatore Scallopini is a chain, but they are locally owned and operated.  All of their locations are in Michigan with the Grosse Pointe location one of the more recent additions.

Dishes are rustic and classically prepared.  The focus is squarely on good flavors and fresh ingredients.   While the dishes may not be cutting edge, ingenuity can take a backseat as dishes are substantial and enjoyable to eat.

While pizza isn't specifically an appetizer item, one is more than enough for 3 or 4 to share before dinner.  One variety has bacon, caramelized onions, and mozzarella cheese.  A hearty blend of salty, sweet, and creamy is a bold way to whet the appetite.

Fried ravioli is another fun to share appetizer.  Cheese and/or meat filled ravioli are rolled in breadcrumbs and deep fried.  Served with a side of marinara, who would've thought that deep fried pasta could be so tasty?

Both entrees and pasta dishes are served with a choice of soup or salad.  The house salad, while simple, is lightly dressed in a delightfully piquant house made viniagrette.

As previously mentioned, most classic dishes are available.  For something a little spicier than usual, try the Pasta Mezzogiorno.  Spaghetti tossed with roasted garlic, kale, hot peppers, and Italian sausage.  Simultaneously fiery and comforting, the flavors meld together well, especially when sprinkled with a little parmesan.

Speaking of parmesan, chicken parmesan is a traditional dish that Scallopini's does quite well.  Crunchy, fried chicken breast is covered in bubbly mozzarella and marinara.   Served with a big side of pasta, this could easily be shared or is enough to bring home the next day's lunch.

As if all of this wasn't enough, don't leave Scallopini's without sampling the house made tiramisu.  Delicate, semi-sweet with just enough espresso flavor, it is a perfect ending to an Italian meal.
