Deep Fried Oreos Lead the Way of Unconventional, Delicious Desserts

BluFin Sushi's owner and his executive chef divulge how to make anything sweet even better.

How can you make an Oreo cookie better than it already is? Why, you deep fry it, of course.

owner Joel Radu and executive chef Ryan Warren take this opportunity to divulge how they have created one of the most talked about desserts in the Pointes. The end result is a frozen plate, slathered with vanilla bean ice cream with four deep-fried Oreos placed in each corner, a large dollop of whipped cream filling the center of the plate and all of it wonderfully joined together by a drizzling of homemade raspberry puree. Is your mouth watering yet?

“You can deep fry anything you can batter,” Radu said. “You have to start out with a heavy pan, like a cast iron pan with a heavy bottom. That helps to control the heat better. You need it heated up to 350 degrees.”

Of course, if you are not used to deep frying at home, these instructions are extremely important. NEVER heat oil in a small, tall pan, as the heat needs to be distributed throughout the bottom of the pan, as Radu said. Submerge the battered item you wish to have deep fried.

"Look at the color of the batter to determine when they are done,” Chef Warren said. "It should be a nice, golden brown."

While you can have fun getting creative with your deep-frying experience, there is one key tip Chef Warren has for making your choice of treats.

"Always use something with weight," he said, which rules out stuff like marshmallows. "You can use Snickers bars, pickles, Twinkies."

Whether you are having guests over for a night of cards, or if you are hosting your son or daughter’s sleepover with friends, offering a deep fried dessert could be the clincher on the evening. All of this said, remember that this is a high-fat, high-calorie treat. A steady diet of this sort of dessert is not recommended!
