Grosse Pointe SERVE Coordinator Speaks About Volunteer Work

Former Grosse Pointe Public Schools superintendent Klein explained how Carlisle first became involved with the district in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina when she helped bring about the framing of two Habitat for Humanity houses in the Grosse Pointe South High School parking lot.  After the houses were framed (and signed with messages from participants), they were dismantled and shipped to the Gulf Coast.

"We were the only high school in the United States to do something like that," Klein said, "and it is all due to this lady right here — and we built not one by two!"

Klein and Carlisle explained that SERVE is a resource partnership with the Grosse Pointe Public School System to help students, groups and organizations find (and publicize) volunteer opportunities. "What happens when you serve," Carlisle said, "is you get accustomed to doing it."
