Happening This Weekend: A Toast to Music, Beer and More

Whether you're a night owl or just like to chill in the Village, there's fun to be had close to home.

Find a few things to do this weekend to fill in your calendar.

Where/When: The Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit; ongoing through year's end. Hours are Wednesdays-Thursdays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Fridays, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Why Go: The DIA is offering some fun, with strings attached, naturally. Examples of American “Royal Marionettes” from its Paul McPharlin Puppetry Collection kicked off June 29. Visit the exhibit and see centuries-old marionettes and see one way people in the past amused themselves.

Pricing: Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors, $4 for ages 6-17, and free for DIA members. For membership information call 313-833-7971.

Why Go: Discover the world of Belgian beers, from strong golden ales to wild fermented iambics and much more. This class will walk you through six beer styles ranging from traditional Trappist to more unusual brews.

Where/When: Kercheval and St. Clair, Grosse Pointe. 7 p.m. June 30.

Why Go: Head to the Village for the weekly Music on the Plaza concert. Tonight's act is Metro Jazz Voices, who are bringing American songbook classics to the area, presented by Grosse Pointe Urgent Care. Series sponsored by St. John Hosptial and Medical Center.

Pricing: Free.

Where/When: 350 Lake Shore, Grosse Pointe Farms; June 30-July 3.

Why Go: Grosse Pointe Farms residents (and their friends) have their weekend cut out for them with the Regatta happening all weekend long. Highlights include the June Sailing Series winding down on Thursday and  children's art in the park on Friday. On Saturday the action really kicks off, with the decorated bike parade, pie-eating contest, inflatable boat races, face painting fun, the yellow ducky race, sand castle contest, pie-baking competition, children's games, music, fireworks at dusk. Sunday it's time for the pet parade, the regatta and more.

Pricing: Free for Farms residents.

Where/When: , 9:30 p.m. June 30.

Why Go: Hear local favorites The Hogans play Robusto's, for their Thursday night dance party, with live music, lively drink specials, and the Hard Luck Girls dropping by at midnight.

Pricing: No cover.

Where/When: Dylan's Rawbar & Grille; 9:30 p.m. July 2.

Why Go: Enjoy a rockin' night at Dylan's as the Detroit Daggers headline the house for the night.
