Happening This Weekend: Films, Festivals and Concerts of Color

Music, fairy tales, diversity and more to rock your weekend plans.

Where/When: Along Mack Avenue, daily through July 16.
Why Go: Shoppers should enjoy what Mack Avenue has to offer as businesses hold sidewalk sales through Saturday, and the whole family should have a blast with the bike decorating contest on July 14. The fun starts off at 6 p.m. on the front lawn of Grosse Pointe Woods City Hall. Kids can decorate their bikes for prizes, plus guests can enjoy treats and play games.


Where/When: , 6 and 8:30 p.m. daily through July 16.
Why Go: Hear The Four Freshmen bring their vocal harmonies to the Dirty Dog this weekend.

Where/When: Kercheval and St. Clair, Grosse Pointe, 7 p.m. July 14.
Why Go: Enjoy a free outdoor concert on the Plaza. Tonight's act is the Dave Bennett Jazz Quartet.


Where/When: Midtown Detroit, July 14-17.
Why Go: Celebrate diversity and music at the 19th annual Concert of Colors. It's one long weekend of free concerts at four locations in Midtown: Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and the Scarab Club has shows July 14; the Detroit Institute of Arts hosts acts on July 15; and the Max M. Fisher Music Center has shows July 16 and 17. Highlights include Don Was and Bettye LaVette, on Saturday and Sunday, respectively; plus you'll hear Latin, jazz, folk, rock, hip-hop and more throughout the fest.

FAIRY TALE EXHIBIT
Where/When: , daily except Mondays, from July 16-Sept. 18.
Why Go: The Ford House has an enchanting summer planned, with a summer show starting Saturday, Fairy Tale Art: Illustrations from Children's Books. The exhibit features dozens of original drawings and paintings from renowned artists, plus throughout the two months, lectures and family-friendly activities are planned. The real jewel in this crown happens next week, as on July 23 the Fairy Tale Festival. More on that one next week.
Pricing: Free for members. Otherwise exhibit is included with house tour admission: $12 for adults, $11 for seniors, $8 for kids 8-12, and ages 5 and under get in free.

Where/When: Balduck Park, Chandler Park Drive and Canyon, Detroit, 8:30 p.m. July 16.
Why Go: The Alger Theater hosts a free outdoor event, with music and a movie. At 8:30 p.m. Eric and Diana McNary perform, and at dusk a fantasy film, Eleanor's Secret, will be shown.
