Heavy Rain Causes Flooded Roads, Power Outages, Stress

Nearly 900 DTE customers are without power in Grosse Pointe Park, roadways throughout the Grosse Pointes are heavily flooded and Grosse Pointe Woods Department of Public Works has closed a residential road due to the heavy flooding.

The eerily similar conditions as May when the area received heavy unrelenting rainshowers that led to flooded roads, stranded motorists, flooded basements and power outages are upon the Grosse Pointes again.

The rain, which began as a light mist Monday, picked up overnight and has doused the Detroit area. According to the National Weather Service, the rain is expected to continue into tonight when the temperatures will drop below freezing and turn it into snow.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for any southeastern Michigan community east of U.S. 23, which includes Detroit, the Grosse Pointes, St. Clair Shores and beyond.

With more than an inch of rainfall overnight from Monday to Tuesday and another inch expected throughout the day Tuesday, the National Weather Service is warning of possible flooding of the area's rivers.

The Deparment of Public Safety has closed Anita between Mack Avenue and Helen Road due to heavy flooding and poor drainage. The road is closed temporarily and will be reopened when the flooding subsides.

Department of Public Works crews are out in the Woods clearing possibly blocked drains from the downed leaves and the alert warns residents of the combined storm water-sewage removal system. The street flooding is in part due to the restricted flow covers placed on the drains to prevent the system from being overwhelmed and backing up into basements.

Meanwhile, nearly 900 DTE customers along the -Detroit border are without power, including part of the Kerheval Avenue shopping/business district and the . The outage began about 10 a.m. and is between Kercheval and Jefferson. Restoration of power could be as early as 1 p.m. but as late as 3 p.m., according to the estimation on the map.

Stress and worry are plaguing residents in --a few of whom posted on Grosse Pointe Patch's Facebook page before sunrise Tuesday voicing concern about the rain and their basements.

Many residents in the Inland District of the Farms have as a result of the combined drainage system that backed up into basements. --only a short time after they repaired their basements from the first flood.
