Music on the Plaza Tonight: The Sun Messengers

The weekly outdoor music series features a jazz band with salsa and latin style to their music.

The Sun Messengers are playing tonight at the weekly outdoor concert series, Music on the Plaza, on St. Clair Street near Kercheval. 

The Sun Messengers are the house band for the Detroit Pistons. The band also regularly performs for the Grosse Pointe Greatest Block Party held in the fall. They will feature a variety of music, including rhythm, blues, pop, Motown, big band and dancing is encouraged. 

In it's 24th seasons, the outdoor concert series performances are free and open to anyone who wishes to attend.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair for the shows, which are every Thursday at 7 p.m. through Aug. 4 on St. Clair Street near Kercheval Avenue. City of Grosse Pointe police block off the street to motorists and the performers set up on the sidewalk. 

In the event of rain, the free concerts are performed inside  about two blocks from the normal location.

The series is put on by the Grosse Pointe Village Association as well as . 

The schedule as provided by the association is:

  • July 14-Dave Bennett Jazz Quartet
  • July 21-Paul Keller Orchestra
  • Aug 4-Rhythm Society Orchestra

*Note there is not a concert July 28 as the Village Sidewalk Sale is July 29 to 30

Already this year, Metro Jazz Voices, Los Gatos, the Motor City Brass Band and the jazz bands from North and South high schools have performed as part of the series.
