Supplements Can Add Zip to Your Health

Make sure the supplements you take are high quality.

Taking supplements can be a very smart decision, especially as health issues crop up. Maurice Paine, manager of in Grosse Pointe Woods, said fish oil, vitamin D3 and multivitamins top the list of his best sellers.

And while discounted products can offer a large volume at a low price, Paine said to take care when purchasing your supplement.

“Particularly with the fish oil, you need it to be a high quality,” Paine said. “It can go rancid fairly quickly. Like the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. You can go to Costco and get 300 fish oil capsules for $9.99, but they won’t be the high quality you should take.”

Fish oil is exceptional for cardiovascular, joint and brain health. It also benefits your eyes and lowers cholesterol, in addition to addressing inflammation issues. Considering all of the good this little capsule can do, you are better served to get it from a store that specializes in health supplements.

Ironically, Paine said his business has been robust with the rise in health care costs. People, he said, are looking for ways to stay healthier to avoid incurring prescription and doctors bills.

“A lot of people have lost their health care or they’re more interested in staying healthy to avoid the costs of (traditional) health care,” he said. “Women are far and away the biggest shoppers. But buying supplements crosses over most ages, ethnic backgrounds. There is really no way to generalize who buys them. People are also becoming more aware of the dangers of prescription drugs and they want a natural alternative.”

One other tip for those with seasonal allergies, Quercetin is a natural remedy for those itchy eyes, sore through and other wonderful symptoms that arrive with the blossoms.
