Tea Gala to Benefit Grosse Pointe Theatre

Spectacular costumes, fancy tables, good food, entertainment and supporting a Grosse Pointe cultural gem are all part of this Sunday's Tea.

If you’re looking to do something out-of-the-ordinary that is refined yet very entertaining, tasty and beautiful, then the ’s event on Sunday, June 26, may be just what you need.

A Theatrical Affair Afternoon Tea will take place this Sunday, 2-5 p.m. at the ’s Crystal Ballroom. Not since 2007 has the theatre put on this popular event, which features elegantly decorated tables, a silent auction, a Broadway review, a fashion show highlighting spectacular costumes from this past theater season, a delicious meal and, of course, tea.

“It is really five events in one,” said the Tea’s co-chair Kathy Conlon, a longtime member of the theatre. “The tables are spectacular, jaw-dropping. This event is a huge undertaking but well worth it, knowing that our guests will see a tea like no other. Our goal is to make this event one of the most enjoyable, entertaining afternoons for our guests, while sharing just some of the creativity the Grosse Pointe Theatre has to offer.

“The Grosse Pointe Theatre is a cultural gem in our community,” she added. “This event will help support our programs.”

In addition to the magnificent tablescapes and the delicious meal, attendees will be treated to an up-close look at many of the costumes worn in the theatre's spring production of The Scarlet Pimpernel. These costumes, designed and sewn by Theatre volunteers–led by and Peggy Ptasznik–are, in a word, stunning. Actors from the show will model them during the Tea. Additionally, guests will get a special encore performance of the hilarious Creation of Man song (and dance) taken directly from The Scarlet Pimpernel. Additionally, four very talented theatre members will perform a Broadway musical review.

Guest are encouraged to “dress” for the event in their finest hats and garb. Tickets are $55 and must be purchased in advance by contacting the Theatre at 313-881-4004.

Each season, the Grosse Pointe Theatre produces five plays on its main stage–three of which are musicals. Additionally, the theatre produces a play in a smaller “black box” theater, this past year producing at the . The theatre also has a popular—and growing—Youth on Stage program, which attracts local children each year with its workshop programs and productions. Just this past season, nearly 60 children auditioned for roles in the youth production of Annie. Another 65 children recently showed up to audition for about 12 roles in this fall's main stage production of The Music Man.
