Enjoy Friday Night Live at the DIA

Enjoy Friday Night Live at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Museum hours are 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Fridays, and you can enjoy

  • 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. performances by the George Cole Quintet, described by the DIA as "superbly crafted and melodically sophisticated original music (that) brings to mind George Gershwin, Johnny Mercer and Cole Porter. The group features Cole’s vocals and hot guitar playing and romantic duets with vocalist Molly Mahoney. The mix of high energy guitar playing, soaring violin flights by Julian Smedley and propulsive rhythm guitar creates a dynamic musical experience."
  • 11 a.m.–3 p.m.: Carve a simple wax crayon to make your own Cylinder Seals. These seals were used by people in Sumeria (present day Iraq) as a signature and to prove ownership.
  • 6–9 p.m.: Learn the art and tradition of making Uchiwa, a style of paper fan common in Japan, and make your own to take home.
  • Drawing in the galleries for youth (from 6-9 p.m.), with materials provided
  • Drawing in the galleries for adults (6-9 p.m.) with materials provided.

Adults must accompany children younger than 12 on workshop and gallery drawing projects.

Museum admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors, $4 youths 6-17, $5 for college students with ID, free for children 5 and under, Detroit residents (only on Fridays and with proof of ID), and free for members.
