Grosse Pointe Theatre Seeks Cast in Upcoming Production

Talking Headstones offers actors of all ages an opportunity to participate in an outdoor production with a limited time commitment.

If you’ve acted before, currently participate in theater or have fancied yourself a potential thespian, then you’ll want to mark Friday, Aug. 5 and Saturday, Aug. 6 on your calendar. That is when the  will hold auditions for its annual Talking Headstones production.

Talking Headstones isn’t your typical theater production. Far from it. Instead, it is a throwback to the days of outdoor theater–before lights, microphones and fancy curtains. The venue for Talking Headstones is a small wooden stage erected in historic St. Paul Cemetery on Moross at Country Club Lane. This year the theatre will hold four performances, Sept. 8-11, all in the evening, after dark. What’s more, the show is a compilation of original short historical plays written by members of the GPT.

“I think there are three reasons why Talking Headstones is so popular,” said Grosse Pointe Woods resident Jane Burkey, who will direct the show again this year. “First, there is the uniqueness of it being in a cemetery. Second, they are interesting stories about the history in and around Grosse Pointe. And third, it’s an old-time theater setting, outside and without any power.”

For actors, this is a great opportunity to get involved with a production that doesn’t require the typical three-month time commitment. The rehearsal schedule is much shorter, as is the run of the show, Burkey added.

“We are looking for men, women and children for these plays,” Burkey said. “We will have around seven different short plays we need to cast; in particular we are looking for men between the ages of 25 and 40, and children. We are hoping to have scripts available by Aug. 1 for those wishing to audition.”
