Grosse Pointe Park Father, Songwriter Celebrates Halloween with Original Tune

John Jeffrey Hodges "On Halloween" a fun take on trick-or-treating

We all know Halloween isn't just for the kids, and Jeff Hodges, an overgrown kid and dad from , is proof of that.

Hodges, a singer, songwriter and musician, has put into song what we many might feel on this sugar-filled holiday in his fun single: "On Halloween," a full band and back-up singers in a style something like heavy-metal meets Green Day.

If you want to give it a listen, go to YouTube or iTunes and search John Jeffrey Hodges, where "On Halloween" and many of his other songs can be found. Many of his songs are recorded as John Jeffrey Hodges and the Big Boys.

The opening lyric of "On Halloween:" I will knock on every door." The refrain: "I want more candy." The ending: A creaky door.

"On Halloween was written and recorded for an event at ,"  Hodges recalled. "I thought I've got to come up with something that kids like, and I wanted adults to relate to it too.

"And aren't we all wanting something, adults kids like you and me, whether it's candy or anything else?"

Hodges is the dad who successfully mixes hip with responsible, recording with musicians who have worked with Eminem and other stars and also volunteering at his son's school, , where he has served on the PTO.

And while "On Halloween" is a really just a silly, happy song, Hodge's music is a serious endeavor.

Hodges' release last year, "KiddyDittys (A Kids' Album For Adults)," got national airplay and is in regular rotation with some local families.

Hodges, quick to pick up the guitar and paper to put out his observations, feelings and ideas, started writing songs at the age of 16, is currently recording in various studios around metro Detroit, putting out what he calls "the project of a lifetime," a 60-song catalog of his originals backed and produced by award-winning and accomplished musicians.

Hodges current big dream is to see his songs used in television, movies and of course on radio. His long-term dream--and legacy--is the musical record he'll leave for his son Jack, a fifth-grader who does not rate his dad very high on the cool scale, and for Jack's children.

"If nothing else comes of this," Hodges says. "That would be worth it."
