St. Clair Shores Native Directs Barbara Streisand in "The Guilt Trip"

Anne Fletcher has gone from the shores of Lake St. Clair to the silver screen.

Fletcher began dancing in her pre-teen years, and taught other dancers in her mother's basement in St. Clair Shores. But she had dreams of performing on a bigger stage in California.

After graduating in 1984 from Lake Shore High School, she headed west.

"She was following a dream. She wanted to dance and act," said her mother Kathleen Fletcher, who now lives in Grosse Pointe.

Once she arrived in Hollywood she began taking dance and acting classes, taking in everything along way including how to choreograph for film.

In the mid-1990s she began getting dancing roles in films including "The Flintstones," then moved on to be a choreographer for "Bring it On" and movement coach for Halle Berry in "Catwoman."   

Then in 2006, she took the next step to be director and choreographer in the movie "Step Up." She followed that movie by directing "27 Dresses" and "The Proposal."

"She left and never looked back," said Fletcher's proud mother.

While she has been successful in Hollywood, she hasn't forgotten her roots. She returned to Detroit to choreograph the robot and child dance in locally-filmed "Real Steel."

She has also included her family in her movies, including her new movie.

Movie-goers will be able see her mother in the steak house scene where she brings water to Streisand. 

"I couldn't believe it, said Fletcher, who called Streisand an "icon." "It was surreal."

Fletcher also has had cameos in "The Proposal" coming out of a cafe, as a street vendor in "27 Dresses" and to dance next to Samuel L. Jackson in "Soul Men.

And for those who see the movie, Fletcher recommends they stay through the credits to watch the bloopers.
