Barbara Gilleece/ Party Patter/ Party Hosting Tips

Simple ideas on how to make your next event run smoothly.

Your husband comes home and announces that you are having a party next week for some of his college classmates and their wives. The thought of hosting a party by yourself puts you in a panic. Here are a few ideas to get your started.

To begin with, make sure you or a friend answers the door. We have all been there at one time or another. You ring the bell and no one answers.

Take their coats and offer them a drink—although through the years I have found some people need to get comfortable with your home first before they are ready to have a drink.

Check your bathroom supplies before your guests arrive. Make sure you have enough hand towels and extra paper out just in case you run out. You might want to let your guests know when you greet them where they can find the bathroom, instead of them having to ask in front of everyone.

Put out simple appetizers. Chips and dips, nuts, a vegetable tray for those who are health conscious, and maybe some cheese and crackers. Scatter the appetizers around the room. It's nice to have a light snack before dinner begins.

If you are having a big party, you need to create a flow for your guests. Put your food in one place along with your utensils, plates and napkins. Put your bar in another area with your glassware or disposable cups. It's a good idea to provide three different kind of beers for your guests to chose from, such as a micro brew , some type of lite beer and maybe an import. Add red and white wines and some type of sweeter or sparkling wine.

I would avoid placing anything in your kitchen since I have found this is a place were people tend to congregate.

So I have presented you with useful tips for hosting your own party. When all else fails have a glass of wine and relax. Sharing meals with the people you care about is all that really counts.

Do any of you have some great tips for hosting your own party? Bon Appetit !
