Cottage Inn Pizza Closes Quietly

The Mack Avenue carryout pizza restaurant closed about a month ago essentially with no notice or explanation.

The darkened windows at have been that way for more than three weeks and the closure was quiet and unknown to many, including customers, neighboring businesses and officials.

Cottage Inn offered delivery or carry out pizza and the business maintains a current business license and certificate of occupancy through Grosse Pointe Farms, Director of Public Services Terry Brennan said.

Brennan has been looking into the store's closure with limited success. He was able to confirm that the doors had been closed a little more than three weeks ago but he has not been able to get in touch with the owner, whose cell phone is disconnected, he said. He doesn't get an answer at her other telephone number and the line to the store just rings.

Brennan is also trying to get in touch with the building's owner, who is in Clinton Township, for an updated business license and hopefully more information.

The first thought by Farms officials was that the owner had taken a vacation without leaving a note in the window as is often done by locally operated store owners.

Brennan said the woman who owned the store put a tremendous amount of work into the store and was surprised of its closure.

When Patch recently visited neighboring businesses--an alteration store and a diner--employees were unaware of its closure they said. One employee even walked outside to confirm that it was indeed closed.

The store remains in tact but dark. Cash registers, ovens and other equipment remain at the site, including an open sign that would normally be lit during operational hours.

Meanwhile, an ad featuring the business has been on Craigslist since May 10, boasting a "well established locale...known for its great pizza and toppings." According to the ad, the entire business, including the kitchen appliances and all of the restaurant's hardware are part of the sale. The building, according to the ad, is not for sale but the franchise is with an $80,000 price tag. The lease on the space is $1,700 per month, according to the ad.

Patch is waiting for a return call from the broker handling the sale.
