Jewelry Stores Have the Sparkle to Ring in the New Year With a Ring

Still looking for for a gift that will never go out of style, or a special engagement ring if you are going to pop the question on New Year's Eve? Here are some local jewelers to shop for that special gem.

A small gift can make a big impression, especially if it's jewelry.

There is no shortage of fine jewelers in the Grosse Pointes and in St. Clair Shores, and just about any place one chooses to shop at will have a wealth of options to choose from, be they an affordable silver trinket or something bold and gold.

"Christmas is the biggest engagement season," says Michael Agnello of Michael Agnello Jewelers, adding, "I hope the pattern sticks."

His shop has been around for 37 years, so he should know. Plus, with the diamond engagement showroom they added a year ago, with more than 1,000 styles of engagement rings, customers can really sink their teeth into the ring-buying experience.

Quality remains king when it comes down to buying an engagement ring, Agnello adds. Platinum, 14-karat and 18-karat are the norm, and diamonds lead the pack.

"(The holidays are) a big time for engagements," agrees Anthony Ahee, of Edmund T. Ahee Jewelers. Three-stone and halo-style arrangements remain popular ring styles, as do solitaire, cushion and emerald cuts.

Engagements mean brisk holiday business at George Koueiter & Sons Jewelers, too. Tacori engagement rings, which have a vintage look, remain perennial favorites, and classic cuts like solitaire and princess style also do well, most set in white gold or platinum settings, Paul Koueiter adds.

Harry Thompson, owner of Maloof Jewelry & Gifts, says round and princess cuts sell the best at his shop, too, followed by cushion cuts. White is right for engagement rings, he adds, with white gold being his hot seller.

The trend, be it for engagement or any fine jewelry gift, leans toward timelessness, says Ahee. "A lot of people are going down that route. The ultimate goal is to purchase a gift that will last for years and years."

Diamonds are big beyond engagement rings, Ahee and Koueiter say. Diamond studs, tennis bracelets and solitaire pendants always do well. It's a gift that will last, something which seems to be an important detail these days.

The colored diamond trend seems to be more of just that—a trend. "White diamonds are still the big thing," Koueiter says.

Another hot item for the holidays are earrings. "(They're) huge for Christmas. You can never go wrong with diamond studs," Agnello says. "(Earrings are) like a tie to a man."

With the price of gold being so high, Agnello says that they're doing brisk business with sterling silver and semi-precious gemstone pieces. They have some very popular Honora pieces, made of pearls and silver. "They're breathtaking and reasonable," he adds.

Ahee sells a large variety of quality watches —from stainless steel to 18-karat gold. They also sell some "fun and casual pieces," he adds, which "steer toward silver," which all jewelers agreed is selling very well these days.

The charms have it for Armando & Son's Jewelry. They sell plenty of other jewelry, from engagement rings to watches, but Alexander Apess says their Chamilia charm bracelets tend to be their bread and butter. Whether one is looking for a starter bracelet -- or earring or necklace -- or charms to add to a piece of jewelry, these do very well at their shop, Apess says. That they're made of silver makes them affordable but ensures they'll last, and with such a broad variety of charms available, they easily make for a unique piece of jewelry.
