Silver and Gold (and Diamonds): A Fine Jewelry Shopping Guide in Grosse Pointe

What's sparkling on holiday wish lists this year, and where to buy that bling in Grosse Pointe.

The holidays are a time of sparkle, often quite literally. Eartha Kitt sang about wanting something from Tiffany under her holiday tree, and while we may not have them in the neighborhood, but we do have plenty of fine jewelry shops to visit for that perfect present, be it for a Christmas engagement or simply just because.

"It's a big time for engagements," says Anthony Ahee, of Edmund T. Ahee Jewelers. Three-stone and halo-style arrangements remain popular ring styles, as do solitaire, cushion and emerald cuts.

Engagements are a hot item this time of year at George Koueiter & Sons Jewelers, too. Tacori engagement rings, which have a vintage look, remain perennial favorites, and classic cuts like solitaire and princess style also do well, most set in white gold or platinum settings, Paul Koueiter adds.

The trend, be it for engagement or any fine jewelry gift, leans toward timelessness, says Ahee. "A lot of people are going down that route. The ultimate goal is to purchase a gift that will last for years and years."

Diamonds remain hot beyond the popping of the question, Ahee and Koueiter agree. Diamond studs, tennis bracelets and solitaire pendants always do well. It's a gift that will last, and the recipient will get a lot of use out of something timeless.

The colored diamond trend seems to be more of just that—a trend. "White diamonds are still the big thing," Koueiter says.

That's not to say it's all diamonds. Ahee sells a large variety of quality watches —from stainless steel to 18-karat gold. They also sell some "fun and casual pieces," he adds, which "steer toward silver."

Silver sells well, too, at Koueiter, including Pandora and John Hardy designs.
